7/11/24 Five relievers the Mets should target at the MLB Trade Deadline. Five relievers the Mets could potentially target at the trade deadline. AP Photos By Manny Gómez | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com The Mets have a relief pitching problem. This month, the Mets bullpen has allowed 29 runs (27 earned) in 24 2/3 innings , an MLB-worst 10.04 ERA . This comes as a result of pitching shorthanded while Edwin Díaz served a suspension at the end of June and early July. It doesn't help that pitchers like Brooks Raley and Drew Smith suffered season-ending injuries and Sean Reid-Foley and Reed Garrett are currently on the IL . 5/22/24 Mets reliever Brooks Raley to get Tommy John surgery, out for the season. The downtrodden New York Mets received more bad news in the middle of Tuesday's 7-6 loss to the Cleveland Guardians — lefty reliever Brooks Raley is out for the remainder of the season, and will be undergoing Tommy John surgery next week. It is possible that Raley, 35, has pitched his last game as a Met, as he is set to be a free agent after the 2024 season.

5/22/24 Mets pitcher to undergo Tommy John surgery. Mets reliever Brooks Raley will undergo Tommy John surgery next week, manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed after Tuesday's loss to the Cleveland Guardians. Tim Healey of Newsday was the first to report the news earlier Tuesday night. “It's unfortunate because he gave it everything he had,” Mendoza said, via SNY. Mendoza said that Raley tried to pitch this week but it didn't feel right, so he went back to the doctor and decided to have surgery on his elbow.

5/21/24 Mets Reliever Brooks Raley to Undergo Tommy John Surgery. The New York Mets will have to go the rest of the 2024 season without a crucial piece to their bullpen. Left-hander Brooks Raley, who was placed on the injured list back in April with elbow inflammation, will undergo Tommy John surgery, ending his season after just eight appearances. Beat writer Tim Healey of Newsday was the first to report. A free agent after the season, the 35-year-old southpaw may have pitched his last game in a Mets uniform.

5/15/24 New York Mets' Star Reliever Diagnosed With UCL Sprain; Promising Hurler Suffers Setback. This New York Mets' late-inning arm has finally gotten a proper diagnosis on his injury. Left-handed relief pitcher Brooks Raley has a UCL sprain and will be shutdown for two weeks before being re-evaluated, as manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters in Philadelphia on Wednesday. The good news, according to Mendoza, is Raley's latest round of testing showed healing in his elbow. Raley has been on the 15-day injured list since April 21 with what was first being called left elbow inflammation.

5/12/24 Veteran Mets lefty could be done for season. The Mets are holding out hope that reliever Brooks Raley will return this season. Speaking with reporters on Saturday at Citi Field, Raley confirmed that he will travel to Texas to meet with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister on Tuesday. “It's a little more complex,” Raley said. The 35-year-old went over possible options for him moving forward, including throwing “through it” and shutting it completely down, which the Mets are currently doing.

The Mets aren't ready to rule out Brooks Raley for the entirety of the season, but it sure doesn't sound as though the lefty will be back any time soon. Raley is seeking another opinion, this time with Dr. Keith Meister of his native Texas. Dr. Meister, the longtime Texas Rangers' team doctor, specializes in the reconstruction of shoulders, elbows and knees. Along with Dr. Neal ElAttrache of Los Angeles, Dr. Meister is one of the most prominent, sought-after surgeons for elbows.

5/02/24 Brooks Raley injury: Mets reliever will be out 'longer than anticipated'. New York Mets reliever Brooks Raley will be out “longer than anticipated,” according to manager Carlos Mendoza, as he continues recovering from a left elbow injury. “It's one of those where inflammation went down and he's still playing catch, but he's not going to be as quick as we thought it was going to be,” Mendoza told reporters on Thursday before the Mets' series finale against the Chicago Cubs (h/t SNY). Raley was originally placed on 15-day IL on April 21 due to what was described as elbow inflammation and was eligible to return from the IL next week. “We're not going to be as aggressive as we thought when he went down originally,” Mendoza added.

4/16/24 Mets players watched Carlos Mendoza closely after ugly 0-5 start: 'He passed' the test. The Mets opened the season 0-5 and to some, the sky was falling, according to Brooks Raley. “People were talking about 1960-something and how long we could go without winning a game,” the reliever said Monday. But at least one person didn't panic, Raley added: rookie manager Carlos Mendoza. “It's tough for a first-time manager to have an 0-5 start,” Raley said. “We all wanted to see how he would react. Who wasn't looking at that? Especially as players, we want to see who you are when you fail. It was a great test and he passed it.” Mendoza said the thought of a team meeting crossed his mind, but it's not something he wants to do, preferring “one-on-one” conversations or addressing players at

11/23/23 Mets bullpen upgrades David Stearns should consider. When it comes to the bullpen, the Mets have to shift their priorities next season. Former general manager Billy Eppler wanted “optionable” arms in order to keep them fresh. Few could have foreseen the starting rotation falling apart the way it did, but it became apparent early on that the bullpen was going to have to pick up a lot of slack for the starters. Starters routinely failed to go seven innings and the Mets relied heavily on their veteran trio of left-hander Brooks Raley and right-handers David Robertson and Adam Ottavino. Maybe it would have been different if closer Edwin Diaz had been around, but the Mets still didn't have the middle relief to get to Diaz on most nights.

11/10/23 Brooks Raley was solid out of the bullpen. At the 2022 Winter Meetings, the Mets addressed the need for a left-handed reliever by trading for (then) 34-year old Brooks Raley from the Tampa Bay Rays for pitching prospect Keyshawn Askew. Raley, a former top prospect who reinvented himself as a bullpen specialist after a stint in the KBO, came over on a $4.5 million contract, with a $6.5 million player option for 2024, which the Mets have subsequently picked up this offseason. Raley, in addition to being the Met's primary lefty, was a more important piece of the bullpen than expected after the injury to Edwin Díaz in the World Baseball Classic, as he took on a higher percentage of high leverage innings due to Díaz's absence.

11/04/23 Mets Morning News for November 4, 2023. After a productive first season in New York, the Mets have picked up Brooks Raley's $6.5 million team option for the 2024 season. 9/06/23 Mets Notebook: Brooks Raley not looking too far ahead with club option impending. Brooks Raley has been traded enough times to know that he can't look too far ahead into the future. “You go day-by-day, for sure,” Raley told the Daily News in Washington this week. Raley has been one of the Mets' more reliable relievers this season and on most nights, the only left-hander available. Between Raley's experience pitching in high-leverage situations and the Mets' general lack of left-handed pitching in the bullpen, he's been called upon to play a variety of roles this season and he's played all of them well.

8/09/23 Seiya Suzuki looks to adopt a more relaxed approach as he prepares to return to Chicago Cubs lineup after a mental reset. In a favorable matchup against left-handed reliever Brooks Raley in the eighth inning of Monday's loss to the New York Mets, Suzuki fell behind 1-2 in the count before a caught-in-the-middle half-swing on a changeup down and out of the zone ended his pinch-hitting appearance with a strikeout. Chicago Cubs manager David Ross gave Suzuki a mental reset after a hitless, two-strikeout performance Friday against the Atlanta Braves, who started lefty Max Fried. In the second season of a five-year, $85 million contract, Suzuki has started only two of the Cubs' eight games in August.
