White Sox heading for worst season in MLB history. As perseverance fades into futility, the Chicago White Sox, enduring the most miserable campaign in modern Major League Baseball history, are struggling to avoid setting an MLB season loss record. The White Sox lost 4-3 in 13 innings on Wednesday at the Los Angeles Angels, falling to 36-117 with nine games remaining in a nightmare six-month season. A Jordyn Adams single in the 13th inning drove in Eric Wagaman from third base with the winning run for the Angels, who rallied to tie the game three times. The 1962 New York Mets set the MLB record for most losses in a season with 120 while the 2003 Detroit Tigers own the American League record for most defeats with 119.

Red Sox Prospect Chase Meidroth Walked His Way Into Potential. Chase Meidroth gets on base just about everywhere he goes. Affiliates in the Boston Red Sox farm system are well aware of that. Now in the Boston system, Meidroth sports a .427 lifetime clip. Meidroth played the full 2024 season in Triple-A and kept producing the way he knows how.

Top Red Sox reliever: 'I think next year will be my last year'. Red Sox righty Chris Martin said last July that he plans to pitch for as long as a team wants him. “I'm going to play for as long as they let me — as long as I can still do it,” Martin said. “To be 100% honest, I think next year will be my last year,” Martin said. The Red Sox setup man, who turned 38 on June 2, plans to pitch in 2025 but he said he's 95% sure that will be it for him.

Zack Gelof doubled home the go-ahead run and scored another in a two-run eighth inning, and the visiting Oakland Athletics sent the Chicago Cubs to the verge of playoff elimination with a 5-3 victory Wednesday afternoon. Tyler Soderstrom had two hits, including a homer, scored two runs and drove in a pair for Oakland (67-86), which completed the interleague portion of its schedule with a winning record (24-22). Despite 2 2/3 shutout innings from Justin Steele in a comeback effort, Chicago (77-75) dropped 6 1/2 games out of the final National League wild-card spot, pending later results, with just 10 games remaining.

Rookie Wyatt Langford homered, doubled twice and became the first Texas player this season to reach base five times, struggling Jonah Heim delivered a two-run single to break a sixth-inning tie and the Rangers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 13-8 on Tuesday night. Leody Taveras also had a homer among his three hits for the Rangers. Langford, who also walked twice, has 12 homers and 25 doubles this season.

Although the Baltimore Orioles are not in serious danger of missing out on the postseason, they haven't been this far out of the American League East lead since June. Injuries to Jordan Westburg and Ryan Mountcastle have made it harder to score runs in the midst of an offensive slump. Shea Langeliers homered twice, including a towering solo drive that cleared the Wrigley Field bleachers in left, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3 on Tuesday night. Willi Castro hit a two-run homer, Matt Wallner had two RBIs and the Minnesota Twins bounced back from a crushing loss in the series opener to beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-1 on Tuesday night and stay locked into the final AL wild card. Castro connected in the eighth inning, and both of Wallner's RBI singles came off Gavin Williams (3-10), who has just one win in his last seven starts. The Twins entered with a 1 1/2-game lead over Detroit for the last playoff berth, and they kept it with solid defense, strong relief and Castro's big swing one night after blowing a 3-0 lead on Monday.

Baltimore Orioles Outfielder Receives Strong Rookie Grade. The Baltimore Orioles are limping into the playoffs, as they haven't played very well in quite some time now. With October right around the corner, the Orioles should still be a playoff team, but the franchise can't have too much confidence that they are going to make any noise in the playoffs as of now. While it isn't overly shocking that the pitching staff outside of Corbin Burnes and Zach Eflin has struggled for the most part, it is surprising to see that the lineup has not done well in the second half of the season. Baltimore's lineup is filled with young and talented players, and while they were regarded as one of the best lineups in baseball for most of the season, that hasn't been the case of late.

Astros beat the Padres 4-3 in 10 innings after Jose Altuve was ejected in wild scene in the 9th. Grae Kessinger replaced the ejected Jose Altuve and scored on Kyle Tucker’s single in the 10th inning to give the AL West-leading Houston Astros a wild 4-3 win against the San Diego Padres. Astros reliever Héctor Neris loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the inning before getting Manny Machado to ground into a force play. Machado had hit a tying 2-run home run in the sixth. Neris earned his 18th save. Kessinger started the 10th as the automatic runner in place of Altuve, who was ejected along with manager Joe Espada after a crazy scene following the top of the ninth.

Heim was 1 for 34 in September before he lined a single to right field off Tommy Nance (0-2) to score Adolis García and Nathaniel Lowe, giving Texas a 9-7 lead. Heim went to the plate hitting .212 with 53 RBIs after being voted an All-Star starter last season with a career-best 95 RBIs. He added a double in the eighth ahead of Taveras’ homer during a three-run inning.

The White Sox were trying to equal a season-high, four-game winning streak. Instead, they moved one step closer to the majors’ post-1900 record of 120 losses by the 1962 expansion New York Mets. Chicago is 36-116 with 10 games left. The Angels stopped a six-game slide. They scored in the third through seventh innings and had 10 hits for the first time in five games.

Blue Jays hit with major update on Daulton Varsho's injury. The 2024 season has been nothing short of a complete disaster for the Toronto Blue Jays. Robles was thrown out trying to steal home with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the first inning on Tuesday night as his Seattle Mariners took on the New York Yankees. What made the decision more egregious was Justin Turner was at the plate with a 3-0 count against Yankees starter Luis Gil when Robles made his failed dash to try and get Seattle on the board. The Toronto Blue Jays have reinstated shortstop Bo Bichette from the 10-day injured list, but infielder Will Wagner will miss the remainder of the season and outfielder Daulton Varsho has been placed on the IL. Angels' Top Prospect is Demoted, Ending His Season. The Los Angeles Angels have optioned pitching prospect Caden Dana to the minor leagues prior to the conclusion of the 2024 MLB season. Dana made his most recent start on Sept. 15, and pitched just 3.1 innings before he was removed after allowing five hits, five runs (four earned), and two walks while striking out three. The start prior, Dana pitched only one inning but was removed after giving up seven hits, five earned runs, and three home runs while striking out just one. Angels manager Ron Washington said the team made the decision to avoid giving Dana more "negative vibes" as the starts did not go his way.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Emmanuel Clase is breaking bats and records at an almost equal rate.
He's become baseball's grim reaper, the cream of the closer crop. Cleveland's right-hander with a devilish cut fastball not seen since Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera's dominant days with the New York Yankees is having a season to remember.
Maybe one that includes winning the Cy Young, a rarity for relievers.
On Monday night, Clase earned his MLB-leading 46th save — his 33rd straight since May 20 to tie José Mesa's single-season team record — as the Guardians inched closer to an unexpected AL Central title by rallying for a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Twins.
The game followed a familiar script: another Cleveland comeback (the club's 40th), followed by Clase.
Progressive Field may be the only place in the majors where if the bullpen door in right field swings open in the ninth inning, it's game over.
It's been that way was all season.
Guardians second baseman Andrés Giménez knows the drill. Once he hears Clase's entrance song blaring through the ballpark's sound system and sees his teammate jogging across the outfield grass with his braided, colored hair bouncing out of the back of his cap, there's only one thing left to do.
"I feel like I’m going to go home early,” Giménez said. “Honestly, it’s been absolutely incredible this year, and in the last three years. It’s just unbelievable, saving 40 games each season. It’s crazy. It’s special.”
Crazy. Special. Unfathomable. Unhittable.
Clase is posting statistics that almost seem imaginary. He's allowed just five earned runs in 69 1/3 innings, a 0.65 ERA that along with his conversion percentage on saves (94%) has put Clase firmly in the conversation for AL Cy Young consideration.

Could Guardians Turn This Starter Into A Bullpen Weapon?. The Cleveland Guardians were expecting Triston McKenzie to play a key role in their rotation at the beginning of the season. McKenzie has started appearing in a different role for the Columbus Clippers as the one-time starter has started coming out of the bullpen as a multi-innings arm. Had Jason Foley not valiantly slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth to secure the narrow 7-6 victory Monday night, we'd be dissecting and bemoaning this play maybe for the rest of the season. The play happened in the top of the ninth and the Tigers were in position to score what felt like a much-needed, if not mandatory, insurance run. Against triple-digit flamethrower Carlos Hernandez, Spencer Torkelson singled and was motoring toward third on a double into the right-field corner by Zach McKinstry. “I was trying to get my boy an RBI and trying to extend the lead,” Torkelson said after the game.

Former Tigers pitcher likely done for season with shoulder injury. One of the best seasons of Jose Urena's career will likely come to an early end. Urena, the former Tigers pitcher now with the Texas Rangers, was placed on the 15-day injured list this week with shoulder fatigue. The timing of the move makes it that Urena won't be eligible to return until the final day of the regular season, meaning his season is likely over. The 33-year-old Urena went from signing a minor league deal with the Rangers this offseason to posting a career-best posting a career-best 3.8 earned run average in 33 games this season, with nine starts, while throwing the most innings in a season since 2018.

Last week, hours after the Chicago White Sox's latest attempt to win a baseball game fell apart in typically absurd fashion, Davis Martin could only chuckle. Every White Sox player has found a coping mechanism to endure the 2024 season, and Martin's is laughter. Unlike much of the sports world, he's not snickering at the team, but rather at how every day seems to invite something more farcical than the previous. Martin was the starting pitcher in that game, looking to secure Chicago's first win at Guaranteed Rate Field in a month.
