Miller became Oakland’s all-time rookie saves leader after eliciting a game-ending double play off the bat of Chicago’s Pete Crow-Armstrong with a 93-mph changeup. “It’s special, yeah,” Miller told reporters postgame. “Just trying to get to the next one, each time. Now, you get an opportunity to kind of look back on the year and the success I had. The 26-year-old righty surpassed A’s icons and . Street recorded 23 saves in 2005 and Bailey notched 26 in 2009. The two former A’s closers won AL Rookie of the Year for their respective save-heavy campaigns before eventually retiring as two-time MLB All-Stars. Miller, also an admirer of legendary Oakland native and , is respectful of those who paved the way for him to shut down games for the East Bay. “They had long, successful big-league careers — some Hall of Fame careers,” Miller said about Street, Bailey and Eckersley. “And I could only hope to continue to keep up with the pace that they set. [I’ll] just come into next year with the same mentality, same hunger; keep putting us in positions to get in the dugout with a win.” Miller now has a 2.37 ERA and 96 strikeouts over 60 2/3 innings pitched. He also improved his WAR to 2.4 and WHIP to 0.86. The first-time All-Star has been integral to the 67-86 A’s second-half turnaround. Oakland is 30-25 since July 19 and has been an all-around dynamic team across that span, which isn’t too shabby for the by roughly $23 million. Rising and staples like Brent Rooker have jolted the A’s lineup thanks to plenty of stats and streaks. Miller, meanwhile, has held the bullpen down for the last 55 games. He has collected 26 strikeouts and 12 saves in 18 appearances, owning a 2.57 ERA in the span. “One hundred percent, finish strong,” Miller said about having nine games left this season. “We’ve played really, really well pretty much the entire second half. Outside of probably a seven-week skid after we started 17-17, I think we’ve had a really successful year — especially taking a big step forward from the last. “Now, the expectation just gets higher and higher. We know the talent we have [and] the success that we’re capable of. And I think we’re turning heads with the way we’re playing this second half. It’s a testament to the work that each guy in the clubhouse has put in.” Miller missed most of the 2023 season with a right UCL sprain. The A’s missed him, as they finished the past campaign an MLB-worst 50-112. Oakland’s new rookie saves leader knows the team is nowhere near where it wants to be. But, as Miller said, that’s not to say the A’s aren’t capable. The noise of the franchise’s has loomed over Miller and his teammates for much of the year. It won’t be going away, either, as the A’s will finish their 57th and final season as Oakland Coliseum residents on Sept. 26 against East Bay great Marcus Semien and the Texas Rangers. However, Miller has found a way to strictly focus on his craft and the A’s on-field goals for future seasons, revealing the blueprint for the team’s success in 2025. “Consistency across the board,” Miller said. “Putting together a solid effort all sides of the ball. … It’s across the board, just putting the effort in on all sides of the ball and being able to show up with that mentality and effort every day.” The A’s haven’t made the playoffs since the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season when they lost to the and Oakland — the city — indefinitely won’t be back. Miller, though, appears to be the franchise cornerstone who can help the A’s dance again. General manager David Forst’s somewhat surprising retention of Miller at the 2024 MLB trade deadline proves the team believes it, one could imagine — but things can change. Wednesday’s game cemented one thing for sure: Miller is Oakland’s last great, historic closer.

As perseverance fades into futility, the Chicago White Sox, enduring the most miserable campaign in modern Major League Baseball history, are struggling to avoid setting an MLB season loss record. The White Sox lost 4-3 in 13 innings on Wednesday at the Los Angeles Angels, falling to 36-117 with nine games remaining in a nightmare six-month season. A Jordyn Adams single in the 13th inning drove in Eric Wagaman from third base with the winning run for the Angels, who rallied to tie the game three times. Red Sox righty Chris Martin said last July that he plans to pitch for as long as a team wants him. “I'm going to play for as long as they let me — as long as I can still do it,” Martin said. “To be 100% honest, I think next year will be my last year,” Martin said. Zack Gelof doubled home the go-ahead run and scored another in a two-run eighth inning, and the visiting Oakland Athletics sent the Chicago Cubs to the verge of playoff elimination with a 5-3 victory Wednesday afternoon. Tyler Soderstrom had two hits, including a homer, scored two runs and drove in a pair for Oakland (67-86), which completed the interleague portion of its schedule with a winning record (24-22). Despite 2 2/3 shutout innings from Justin Steele in a comeback effort, Chicago (77-75) dropped 6 1/2 games out of the final National League wild-card spot, pending later results, with just 10 games remaining.

St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn, playing through a balky right knee this year, went on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday to end his season. In a corresponding move, the Cardinals recalled right-hander Michael McGreevy from Triple-A Memphis. Lynn, who has inflammation in the knee, went out a winner on Tuesday night, pitching six innings and allowing four hits, one run and two walks with five strikeouts in a 3-1 home victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Dodgers Injury Update: Gavin Stone 'Very Unlikely' To Return In 2024. Gavin Stone was among the Los Angeles Dodgers' most effective pitchers in 2024, but unfortunately, he was also one of the many that suffered an injury. Stone first landed on the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation in early September and he was shut down from throwing for at least 10 days. While there was some hope, albeit slim, that Stone would be back for the playoffs, he and the Dodgers needed everything in his rehab process to be checked without any setbacks.

San Diego Padres ace Yu Darvish might have been sidelined for much of the season due to injuries and a personal matter, but it would be remiss to forget how dominant Darvish is. Since returning to the Padres on Sep. 4, Darvish pitched his best start yet on Monday. Luisangel Acuña has subbed so nicely for the New York Mets already that his brother’s team is in growing danger of missing the postseason. Replacing an ailing Francisco Lindor at shortstop, Acuña capped a huge night at the plate with his first career home run to help the Mets beat the Washington Nationals 10-1 on Tuesday. The 22-year-old Acuña, a younger sibling of Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr., finished a triple short of the cycle and scored three times in his fourth major league game. New York’s victory coupled with Atlanta’s 6-5 loss in Cincinnati left the Braves two games out of a playoff spot with 11 to play. The Mets and Diamondbacks are tied for the second of three National League wild cards at 83-68.

Shohei Ohtani is getting closer to making himself the sole member of an exclusive club.
He's already the sixth player in major league history and the fastest ever to reach 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases, needing just 126 games.
He’s the only player to hit the 40-40 mark in the same game. He did it in style, too, on a game-winning grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning on Aug. 23.
“He’s very goal-oriented,” Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “He likes to take down records.”
On the horizon for Ohtani is potentially becoming the first member of the 50-50 club.
He blasted his 48th homer on Tuesday and has 48 stolen bases with less than two weeks remaining in the regular season.
Ohtani signed a $700 million, 10-year deal with the Dodgers last December. The two-way Japanese superstar hasn’t pitched this season — his first with the Dodgers after six years with the Los Angeles Angels — as he rehabilitates after surgery for an injured elbow ligament that he had a year ago. That has allowed Ohtani to focus on his hitting.
Los Angeles leads the National League West and will be headed to the postseason in October, which will be another first for Ohtani. He didn’t reach the postseason with the Angels, and they never had a winning record during his tenure in Anaheim.

Mets dealt terrible Christian Scott injury blow. The New York Mets will be without one of their young starters for the remainder of 2024 and all of the 2025 season. Right-hander Christian Scott is set to undergo Tommy John surgery next week as announced by his agent, per SNY. Scott, a fifth-round pick in 2021, was called up to the show in May and made nine appearances, compiling a 4.56 ERA. The 25-year-old suffered the elbow injury in July and spent time on the IL.

Baltimore Orioles Outfielder Receives Strong Rookie Grade. The Baltimore Orioles are limping into the playoffs, as they haven't played very well in quite some time now. With October right around the corner, the Orioles should still be a playoff team, but the franchise can't have too much confidence that they are going to make any noise in the playoffs as of now. While it isn't overly shocking that the pitching staff outside of Corbin Burnes and Zach Eflin has struggled for the most part, it is surprising to see that the lineup has not done well in the second half of the season. Baltimore's lineup is filled with young and talented players, and while they were regarded as one of the best lineups in baseball for most of the season, that hasn't been the case of late.

Luisangel Acuña has subbed so nicely for the New York Mets already that his brother's team is in growing danger of missing the postseason. Replacing an ailing Francisco Lindor at shortstop, Acuña capped a huge night at the plate with his first career home run to help the Mets beat the Washington Nationals 10-1 on Tuesday. The 22-year-old Acuña, a younger sibling of Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr., finished a triple short of the cycle and scored three times in his fourth major league game.

Mariners' Robles exits with right hand contusion. Victor Robles is well known for being aggressive on the bases. Robles was thrown out trying to steal home with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the first inning on Tuesday night as his Seattle Mariners took on the New York Yankees. What made the decision more egregious was Justin Turner was at the plate with a 3-0 count against Yankees starter Luis Gil when Robles made his failed dash to try and get Seattle on the board. Gil struggled badly with control and needed 24 pitches to record three outs.

The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed relief pitcher Nick Robertson off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels, MLB Trade Rumors' Steve Adams was first to report Tuesday afternoon. Los Angeles designated Robertson for assignment on Sunday in order to make room for outfielder Gustavo Campero, whose contract they selected from Triple-A Salt Lake. Two days later, the Blue Jays took a flier on the 26-year-old righty.

Passan: The enigma that is Seattle Mariners' Randy Arozarena. The Seattle Mariners are in need of an epic stretch of baseball to get themselves into the playoffs. Rays' McClanahan to face live hitters next week. Tampa Bay Rays ace Shane McClanahan is set to face hitters for the first time next week since undergoing Tommy John surgery last year. Rays manager Kevin Cash before Tuesday night's game against Boston said the left-hander will take the mound on Sept. 26. Cash expects McClanahan will be ready for the 2025 season. McClanahan left an Aug. 2, 2023, loss to the New York Yankees after four innings because the outside of his forearm tightened while he was warming up.

Cascade's Rea steps up for tired Brewers bullpen. Colin Rea skipped his usual side throwing session between starts just in case the Milwaukee Brewers' taxed bullpen needed a couple of innings out of him. It paid off Monday night. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound right-hander from Cascade, Iowa, earned the first save of his 14-year professional career with 2 2/3 innings of shutout ball to close a 6-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in Milwaukee. The Brewers lowered their magic number to two in the quest for a third National League Central Division title in four years.

San Francisco Urged To Move On From Previously Elite Closer in Offseason. There haven't been many positives for the 72-78 San Francisco Giants during the 2024 campaign. The Giants' struggles are, in large part, due to that. Right-hander Camilo Doval perfectly fits that description. During a topsy-turvy 2024 campaign, one of the best things that has happened to the Boston Red Sox has been the youth movement. The Red Sox have had numerous young players perform above expectations this season on both sides of the ball. One of the best surprises for the Red Sox has been rookie right fielder Wilyer Abreu, who came over in the Christian Vázquez trade with the Houston Astros in 2022. Angels' Top Prospect is Demoted, Ending His Season. The Los Angeles Angels have optioned pitching prospect Caden Dana to the minor leagues prior to the conclusion of the 2024 MLB season. Dana made his most recent start on Sept. 15, and pitched just 3.1 innings before he was removed after allowing five hits, five runs (four earned), and two walks while striking out three. The start prior, Dana pitched only one inning but was removed after giving up seven hits, five earned runs, and three home runs while striking out just one. Angels manager Ron Washington said the team made the decision to avoid giving Dana more "negative vibes" as the starts did not go his way.

He's become baseball's grim reaper, the cream of the closer crop. Cleveland's right-hander with a devilish cut fastball not seen since Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera's dominant days with the New York Yankees is having a season to remember.
Maybe one that includes winning the Cy Young, a rarity for relievers.
On Monday night, Clase earned his MLB-leading 46th save — his 33rd straight since May 20 to tie José Mesa's single-season team record — as the Guardians inched closer to an unexpected AL Central title by rallying for a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Twins.
The game followed a familiar script: another Cleveland comeback (the club's 40th), followed by Clase.
Progressive Field may be the only place in the majors where if the bullpen door in right field swings open in the ninth inning, it's game over.
It's been that way was all season.
Guardians second baseman Andrés Giménez knows the drill. Once he hears Clase's entrance song blaring through the ballpark's sound system and sees his teammate jogging across the outfield grass with his braided, colored hair bouncing out of the back of his cap, there's only one thing left to do.
"I feel like I’m going to go home early,” Giménez said. “Honestly, it’s been absolutely incredible this year, and in the last three years. It’s just unbelievable, saving 40 games each season. It’s crazy. It’s special.”
Crazy. Special. Unfathomable. Unhittable.
Clase is posting statistics that almost seem imaginary. He's allowed just five earned runs in 69 1/3 innings, a 0.65 ERA that along with his conversion percentage on saves (94%) has put Clase firmly in the conversation for AL Cy Young consideration.

Had Jason Foley not valiantly slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth to secure the narrow 7-6 victory Monday night, we'd be dissecting and bemoaning this play maybe for the rest of the season. The play happened in the top of the ninth and the Tigers were in position to score what felt like a much-needed, if not mandatory, insurance run. Against triple-digit flamethrower Carlos Hernandez, Spencer Torkelson singled and was motoring toward third on a double into the right-field corner by Zach McKinstry. “I was trying to get my boy an RBI and trying to extend the lead,” Torkelson said after the game.

Taijuan Walker is Back in the Phillies' Starting Rotation. Taijuan Walker will start on Thursday against the New York Mets, Rob Thomson announced on Monday night. The Phillies have struggled to find a consistent 5th starter this season, just like every other team in baseball. Walker struggled immensely when he returned from the IL back at the end of April. Urena, the former Tigers pitcher now with the Texas Rangers, was placed on the 15-day injured list this week with shoulder fatigue. Jordan Montgomery returns to starter role for D-backs at Colorado. Jordan Montgomery pitched his way out of Arizona's rotation and into the bullpen in August after a seven-start stretch in which he posted a 7.88 ERA. Montgomery made four relief appearances for the Diamondbacks after the switch, but with Ryne Nelson landing on the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation, he is returning to the rotation on Tuesday night to oppose the Colorado Rockies in Denver. Montgomery (8-6, 6.25 ERA) will make his 20th start of the season while Colorado will send Ryan Feltner (2-10, 4.89 ERA) to the mound to try to win for the second time in three outings.
