9/19/24 Padres News: Former Closer Booed For Attempting Four-Out Save in San Diego. The boos rained down mercilessly as Josh Hader emerged from the Houston Astros bullpen in the eighth inning Tuesday to begin his multi-inning save attempt at Petco Park against the San Diego Padres. The former San Diego closer refused to appear in multi-inning save situations while pitching for the Padres, making this appearance as awkward as it was intense. Hader usually thrives in hostile environments. “I love this ballpark,” Hader said afterward.

9/18/24 Deadspin | Astros, Padres wrap up series, edge closer to postseason. Josh Hader's return to San Diego on Tuesday included a blown save that thrilled the sellout crowd, followed by a win for him and the Houston Astros in 10 innings over the Padres. Hader and his current club will try for a series win over his former team in the rubber match of a three-game set dripping with playoff implications on Wednesday. Hader's first season with Houston (82-69) has seen him convert 31 saves in 34 chances -- the third blown save came on a wild pitch on his first pitch to Jackson Merrill in the eighth inning Tuesday night -- and pitch to a 3.26 ERA with 97 strikeouts in 66 1/3 innings.

9/16/24 Josh Hader won’t begrudge Padres fans ‘if they think it falls on me’. Former Padres closer talks 2022 NLDS win over the Dodgers, usage rules that became a talking point at end of Padres' disappointing 2023 season

9/04/24 Josh Hader gets 100% real on Astros' inevitability. The Houston Astros struggled to begin the 2024 season. Astros closer Josh Hader never doubted the team. “I mean, we've had meetings… We obviously knew that we weren't playing good baseball early on,” Hader said on Foul Territory. One of the sayings, the cream always rises to the top, right?

8/28/24 Houston Astros Skipper Hints That Demoted High-Priced Reliever Could Return. The Houston Astros have not had their pitching staff put up numbers this season like in year's past. When they landed Josh Hader, the thought was this bullpen would be the best unit in the league like the Astros have produced previously, but the adjustment for their former closer Ryan Pressly into his new setup role took longer than expected. Rafael Montero was one whose issues were on full display with a 4.70 ERA that caused Houston to outright him to the minors after he was coming off a season where he finished with a 5.08 ERA. Considering he signed a three-year, $34.5 million contract ahead of 2023, the fact he was no longer part of their Major League bullpen was a huge cause for concern.

8/26/24 Bedlam at the Bank: Phillies' Bryce Harper walks it off against Josh Hader. It will never make sense that then-San Diego Padres manager Bob Melvin left left-handed closer Josh Hader in the bullpen in Game 5 of the 2022 National League Championship Series with Bryce Harper striding to the plate in the eighth inning. As most baseball fans know, Harper sent a 2-2 pitch from Robert Suarez into the left-field seats to for a two-run homer to give the Phillies a 4-3 lead. Hader, who was warming up, never entered the game and the Phillies won the game and the NLCS to advance to the World Series.

8/03/24 Houston Astros Superstar Ties Impressive Feat of Franchise Legend. Heading into this season, the Houston Astros were viewed as the favorites in the American League once again after they decided to go past the luxury tax threshold by handing Josh Hader the most lucrative contract for a closer in Major League Baseball history. Despite losing three of their prominent relievers in free agency, having the elite left-hander paired with Ryan Pressly and Bryan Abreu on the backend gave the impression that they would have one of the best bullpens in the sport. Pressly was struggling to adjust to his new role, Abreu's ERA was inflated, and Hader was showing some cracks when called upon that wasn't present the previous year. While the Astros' starting pitching injuries were garnering much of the attention, their bullpen was also not performing up to their standard.

7/29/24 Michael A. Taylor’s clutch homer lifts Pirates to 5-3 win over Astros. Michael A. Taylor’s three-run home run off of Josh Hader in the top of the ninth lifted the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-3 win.

7/28/24 Alex Bregman's walkoff homer vs. Dodgers has Astros fans absolutely stunned. The Houston Astros found themselves in a barn-burner with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night. In a rematch of the 2017 World Series, both teams were tied at the bottom of the ninth inning. After Josh Hader preserved the tie at the top of the ninth, Bregman led off the bottom of the inning. Astros fans dug in, expecting a fierce battle and potentially extra innings.

7/27/24 Josh Hader, Blake Snell Departures Benefit Padres' MLB Draft Haul. The San Diego Padres have a couple of former pitchers to thank for their ability to sign multiple draft picks above slot value. San Diego's bonus pool money was significantly larger this year because they received two compensation picks when Josh Hader and Blake Snell turned down qualifying offers and signed elsewhere. The Padres signed their first-round pick Kash Mayfield, a left-handed pitcher out of Elk City High School in Oklahoma, for a $3.44 million signing bonus, which is typical for the projected value of his pick.

7/21/24 Former Houston Astros Reliever Designated for Assignment by Brewers. The Houston Astros went into this season thinking they had upgraded their bullpen following the signing of Josh Hader, but with the loss of three key arms in free agency, the overall depth was thin. Early poor play by Hader, Ryan Pressly and others made some alarm bells go off. Luckily, things have stabilized and the Astros are starting to look like the team that has struck fear in the hearts of teams around the American League for the past seven years. Because of the Hader signing, Houston is one of the few teams who doesn't need to target bullpen help.

7/20/24 Mariners out of first place in AL West after another painful loss to Astros. The lead in the American League West standings belongs to the team that has won the division six out of the last seven seasons. After starting the season with a 12-24 record and riddled with injuries — many of them season-ending — to their starting rotation, it seemed like the Houston Astros' reign of dominance might have finally run its course. When Houston closer Josh Hader struck out Luke Raley on a 97-mph fastball to close out a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over Seattle, the Astros improved to 52-46 on the season, moving a game ahead of the Mariners, who lost their fifth straight game to fall to 52-48.

7/20/24 Houston Astros Closer's Kryptonite Has Distracted From Solid Season. The Houston Astros raised some eyebrows this offseason when they signed a closer to a historic contract, but it has not lived up to it's hype so far. Josh Hader has been one of the best closers in MLB since his rookie campaign. As Cole Jacobson of MLB.com examined how good of a chance some struggling former All-Stars have at turning things around, he believes the former Milwaukee Brewer should be in for a better second half.

7/17/24 Proposed Houston Astros Trade Lands Young, Formerly Elite Closer. The Houston Astros have fought back into looking like a real playoff threat again, which means that they may be buying at the upcoming trade deadline rather than selling. A fast-rising need is someone that can make an impact in the bullpen as Josh Hader has started to show cracks once again. The historic-contract wielding free agent signing hasn't worked out as smoothly as Houston has wanted, so any new moves would likely need to be high-upside cheaper players. Zach Pressnell of FanSided came up with an intriguing trade that could make sense for the Astros to consider, despite the player not being at the top of his game right now.
