9/01/24 Matz (back), out since April, activated by Cards. The St. Louis Cardinals activated left-hander Steven Matz from the 60-day injured list on Sunday after the veteran starter missed four months with multiple back issues. Matz went on the injured list with a back injury at the end of April and aggravated the issue during his rehab in June. Matz, 33, was 1-2 with a 6.18 ERA in six starts with the Cardinals this season, his third campaign of a four-year, $44 million contract with St. Louis. In 10 career seasons with the Mets, Blue Jays and Cardinals, Matz is 55-60 with a 4.31 ERA in 187 appearances (169 starts).

8/16/24 Cardinals could activate pair of pitchers soon to bolster staff. The St. Louis Cardinals are in a tailspin. "A couple of reinforcements look to be back soon," Woo wrote. "Steven Matz (back) didn't allow an earned run over four innings in his latest rehab start for Memphis, and Lance Lynn (knee inflammation) will throw a second bullpen on Friday before potentially going on a rehab assignment." The Cardinals rotation appears to be falling apart.

7/26/24 Giants Reportedly Could Trade Superstar; Should Cardinals Join Sweepstakes?. The St. Louis Cardinals' biggest need right now is another starter toward the front of the rotation. St. Louis currently has a hole in the rotation with Steven Matz out and the club could look to make a move over the next few days with the trade deadline just four days away. The Cardinals have proven that they should be taken seriously this year and will be in the mix for a playoff spot for the rest of the season. The Cardinals at one point were toward the bottom of the National League standings but have completely turned things around.

7/22/24 Cardinals Called One Of Top Options To Land All-Star Pitcher On Trade Block. The St. Louis Cardinals' starting rotation could use a boost and it seems like one is on the way. St. Louis has been great over the last six weeks or so and firmly is in the mix for a National League Wild Card spot. The Cardinals have been so good that they now are expected to be buyers ahead of the trade deadline in just over one week and will address the starting rotation. The Cardinals have a hole in the rotation with Steven Matz out and likely will look to fill it with a veteran hurler with a low price tag.

7/04/24 Two-Time All-Star Is Looking For New Opportunity; Should Cardinals Consider?. The St. Louis Cardinals' biggest need right now is a starter to shore up the back of the rotation. St. Louis has shown this season that it can compete for a playoff spot but adding another depth starter would make things significantly easier. The Cardinals currently are missing Steven Matz so adding someone in his place as soon as possible would make sense. One player who is looking for an opportunity in the short term is two-time All-Star Johnny Cueto.

6/19/24 Cardinals Reportedly Promote Hurler Acquired In Jordan Hicks Trade. The St. Louis Cardinals rotation has held its own this season despite having to deal with instability in the No. 5 spot due to multiple injuries. To cope with the absence of Steven Matz and Drew Rom, the Cardinals have utilized Andre Pallante and even tried transitioning reliever Matthew Liberatore to a starting role for a short period of time. There could be a new solution for the time being, with the latest roster move by St. Louis, which would give a young starter his Major League Baseball debut. "The (Cardinals) are calling up right-handed pitcher Adam Kloffenstein," The Athletic's Katie Woo reported Wednesday.

6/13/24 Cardinals Seen As Contenders To Land White Sox Hurler As Part Of Chicago's Fire Sale. The St. Louis Cardinals rotation is vastly improved from where it was a year ago but it could still use some much-needed bolstering by adding another proven starter. The Cardinals rotation ranks No. 18 with a 4.02 ERA despite being without one of its starters -- Steven Matz -- since the beginning of May. In the meantime, the club has had to fill the vacancy with spot starters. If the Cardinals are serious about contending this year, they'll need to trade for another starting pitcher and recent speculation links St. Louis with a candidate who could make a difference. Chicago White Sox right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde was recently mentioned as an option the Cardinals could target at the July 30 trade deadline, according to The Athletic's Jim Bowden on Thursday.

6/02/24 Cardinals' Oli Marmol reveals huge Steven Matz injury update. The St. Louis Cardinals have been without starter Steven Matz since the beginning of May, but it appears he's not far off a return. Skipper Oli Marmol provided a huge injury update on the lefty Saturday. “#STLCards manager Oli Marmol said that LHP Steven Matz, who has been out since May 3, is scheduled to throw “a full intensity bullpen” on Monday.

5/29/24 Andre Pallante gives Cardinals 6 scoreless innings in series-clinching win against Reds. The fifth starter spot in the Cardinals rotation has remained a question mark ever since Steven Matz went on the injured list at the beginning of May. For at least one day, Andre Pallante provided an answer. Pallante, who made 108 of his 118 previous appearances in the majors out of the bullpen, tossed six scoreless innings and earned his first win as a starter in the big leagues since 2022. Pallante struck out more batters (four) than he allowed hits (three) and worked out of a pair of potential jams to set the Cardinals on a path to a 5-3 win Wednesday afternoon in the rubber match of their three-game set with the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.

5/22/24 Cardinals Top Prospect Has Shined This Season; Should St. Louis Promote Him?. The St. Louis Cardinals have some serious questions in the starting rotation right now. St. Louis' rotation has been in a better place this season than it was last year, but it isn't at full strength right now. The Cardinals currently are missing starter Steven Matz and he likely will be out at least for a few more weeks. Matz was cleared to start playing catch, but hasn't appeared in a game since April 30th and will eventually need a rehab assignment to get him back up to speed.

5/19/24 Sunday's Game Report: Red Sox 11, Cardinals 3. The Cardinals have struggled to find somebody to start in place of the injured Steven Matz since he hurt his back at the end of April but that is far from the only hole in the rotation. Matthew Liberatore got the start on Sunday against the Red Sox at Busch Stadium, the “best option” according to manager Oli Marmol, in what turned out to be another loss in a game started by somebody other than Sonny Gray.

5/14/24 Ex-Mets pitcher's return to mound gets delayed. Steven Matz has been on the injured list all month with a lower back strain, and it looks like the Cardinals pitcher will continue waiting for his return to the mound. Matz was slated to throw a bullpen session on Monday, but that was scrapped due to discomfort. According to Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat, hee received an injection in his back and will be shut down for a week at minimum.

5/03/24 Cardinals lose pitcher Steven Matz and must now decide how to fill his rotation spot. The Cardinals won't have starting pitcher Steven Matz at least until the middle of May, and it remains to be seen how they'll chose to fill the void in their rotation. The Cardinals recalled right-handed reliever Kyle Leahy in a corresponding roster move to take Matz's place on the active roster. The Cardinals (14-17) begin a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox (6-25) at Busch Stadium on Friday night. The White Sox enter the weekend with the worst record in the majors.

5/01/24 After abbreviated start, does Steven Matz's sore back put Cardinals in a bind and how soon?. Days before he felt the velocity slip from his fingertips, Steven Matz experienced the soreness that would infiltrate his start Tuesday with each footfall on a run. The Cardinals' lefty experienced soreness in his lower back jogging this past week, and while he felt the discomfort abate he could not get it to alleviate entirely before taking the ball for Game 2 of a doubleheader against Detroit at Comerica Park. By the fourth inning it became clear that Matz did not have the same zip on his fastball, the same extension or finish to get the same command. Four runs, seven hits, and one strikeout later, he did not finish that fourth inning.
