1/12/24 Former Tigers reliever headed back to Japan. After two seasons in the States, Drew VerHagen is headed back to Japan. The 33-year-old right-handed reliever, who pitched in parts of six seasons with the Detroit Tigers, has signed with the Nippon-Ham Fighters. The deal could be worth up to $8 million if VerHagen exercises a player option for 2025, according to Robert Murray of Fansided, who reported the agreement. The Tigers selected VerHagen out of Vanderbilt University in the fourth round of the 2012 draft.

11/03/23 Cardinals Reliever Elects Free Agency After Strong Season In St. Louis' Bullpen. Cardinals Reliever Elects Free Agency After Strong Season In St. Louis' Bullpen St. Louis could lose a key pitcher this winter Author: Scott Neville Publish date: Nov 3, 2023 12:07 PM EDT In this story: St. Louis Cardinals The St. Louis Cardinals' 2023 season will be remembered for the lackluster pitching performances, nearly across the board, which sunk a promising season. However, there was at least one Cardinals hurler who posted a career year amid the team's struggles, doing what he could to keep the team afloat. That player could be departing this winter. "Drew VerHagen, the lone impending Cardinals free agent, has elected free agency," The Athletic's Katie Woo reported Thursday.

9/03/23 Drew VerHagen had trouble in the ninth inning as the Cardinals depleted bullpen faltered. Cardinals relief pitcher Drew VerHagen had one of those nights on the mound that he'll likely want to forget about as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, starting pitcher Drew Rom remains in the stage of his career where each pitch of every inning serves as a data point for him to analyze as a means of growth. VerHagen regrettably stood on the mound when the final salvo of a back-and-forth offensive assault came off the bat of Pittsburgh Pirates pinch hitter Joshua Palacios (brother of Cardinals outfielder Richie Palacios) as he bashed a two-run home run into the home bullpen behind the right field wall. Palacios' home run also marked the final lead change as the Cardinals fell to the Pirates, 7-6, in the second game of a three-game series at Busch Stadium on Saturday night.

4/22/23 After rare DH success, Mariners face Cardinals again. If pitchers still were allowed to hit in interleague games, they couldn't have done much worse than the Seattle Mariners' designated hitters this season. The six players the Mariners had started in the DH spot entering Friday night's series opener against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals had combined for a .115 batting average with no home runs and one RBI, by far the worst total of any of the 30 major-league teams. Pollock lined the first pitch he saw from reliever Drew VerHagen into the gap in right-center field, his two-run double snapping a tie in a game the Mariners won 5-2.

4/18/23 Taking a Look at the New Drew VerHagen. If you read my articles all winter and listened to the VEB podcast, you'll know that I was high on Drew VerHagen coming into the season. In case you weren't aware, Baseball Savant completely revamped their pitch classifications prior to the start of the season.

3/11/23 Why Cardinals are considering a script flip to pit bullpen contenders vs. top competition. Drew VerHagen could be 'the dirtiest pitcher out there,' says Marmol, who is looking for ways to rewrite reliever schedules to get them high caliber opponents.

3/10/23 Why Cardinals are considering a script flip to pit bullpen contenders vs. top competition. Whatever the score, whoever was up, and regardless of the competition, Cardinals reliever Drew VerHagen had the ninth inning Thursday against Nicaragua. It was a welcome perk then when the Cardinals rallied to take the lead ahead of VerHagen's assigned outing and present him a save opportunity. “You're lying if you say the juices don't get flowing a bit in the ninth inning, (and) it really doesn't matter the game,” VerHagen said. VerHagen faced four batters — one of whom had never played pro ball, one who had not been in the minors since 2010, another who reached Class A in 2022 — and none of whom started the game for Nicaragua.

2/23/23 With starter aspirations, Drew VerHagen 'not worried' about potential role: Cardinals Extra. The workload Drew VerHagen had during the Cardinals' full-squad workout on Thursday in Jupiter, Florida, provided a glimpse of the role the right-hander might have to start his second season in St. Louis. “As we look at it today, as it stands, yeah,” Marmol said when asked if VerHagen is shaping up for a spot in the Cardinals' bullpen come opening day. Despite the 32-year-old's hopes to move into a starting role down the line, being on the field is what's important to him this spring after shoulder and hip injuries — the latter of which required surgery — limited him to 21 2/3 innings in his first year with St. Louis.

1/16/23 At Cardinals urging, Drew VerHagen speeds into spring by upshifting to four-seam fastball. After a year ruined by a hip injury that required surgery, right-hander alters pitch mix for defining stretch of his career since coming back from Japan.

5/31/22 Pujols' sac fly in 10th lifts Cardinals over Padres 3-2. Pujols followed with his second sacrifice fly of the game, lifting a ball to left that easily scored Edman. Drew VerHagen (3-0), the fourth St. Louis pitcher, started the 10th and benefitted from a perfect throw from left fielder Lars Nootbaar, who had entered the game in the seventh. Jurickson Profar singled to left with two outs and Nootbaar cut down pinch-runner Jose Azocar at home plate to end the inning.

4/22/22 Cardinals RHP Drew VerHagen (hip) placed on 10-day IL. The St. Louis Cardinals placed right-handed pitcher Drew VerHagen to the 10-day injured list Friday due to a right hip impingement. St. Louis recalled left-hander Packy Naughton from Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move. VerHagen said he was pitching through hip discomfort Thursday night when he allowed two hits, one walk and one unearned run over one inning in the Cardinals' 5-0 loss to the Miami Marlins.

4/19/22 Drew VerHagen May Have Revamped His Changeup. Well it’s because VerHagen’s changeup might not be a changeup anymore. It’s early in the year, so it’s impossible to draw any conclusions this soon. That makes it hard to write any articles about significant trends, so that’s not what I will try to do here.

8/23/19 Rodríguez slam, VerHagen lead Tigers over Twins 9-6.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Ronny Rodríguez had three hits, including a grand slam, and Drew VerHagen struck out 11 in a career-high six innings as the Detroit Tigers beat the AL Central-leading Minnesota Twins 9-6 on Friday night.

Rodríguez's first career grand slam capped a five-run sixth inning off All-Star Jose Berríos. The drive helped the Tigers, with the worst record in the league, cut Minnesota's lead to 2 ½ games over Cleveland.

Miguel Sanó and Jake Cave each homered twice for Minnesota, which has recently lost three of four at Target Field to distant division opponents Chicago and Detroit.

Berríos (10-7) allowed five runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. It's the second-most hits he's allowed in a game this season and he's given up at least five earned runs in two of his past four starts after having one such game in the first four months.

In four August starts, Berríos has an 8.43 ERA and the Twins have lost three of the games.

VerHagen (4-2) got another chance in the Tigers' beleaguered rotation and had the best outing of his career. He allowed three runs in six innings — his previous high for strikeouts was five against the White Sox on Aug. 6.

Down 5-3, the Twins loaded the bases in the seventh against José Cisnero. But Buck Farmer entered and got Jorge Polanco to pop out in foul territory to end the inning.

Berríos got out of trouble early against Detroit, which owns the league's worst offense in total runs and batting average. But the Tigers' didn't let Berríos off the hook in the sixth.

Harold Castro and Miguel Cabrera started the inning with singles and Dawel Lugo hit an RBI double. Berríos walked Travis Demeritte to load the bases in front of Rodríguez's 10th homer.

Castro and Lugo each had three hits. Rodríguez is hitting .323 with three home...
