4/29/24 Red Sox Make Surprising Roster Move To Add Garrett Cooper. The Boston Red Sox made a relative surprising roster move Monday to make room for Garrett Cooper, whom the club acquired Saturday in a trade with the Chicago Cubs. The Red Sox designated infielder Pablo Reyes for assignment as part of adding Cooper to the active 26-man MLB roster. It's been a tough season for Reyes, who joined the Red Sox in 2023, but the 30-year-old was a versatile defender, capable of playing all three infield positions and perhaps even the outfield in a pinch given his pre-Boston track record.

Barring something unforeseen, the Red Sox plan to activate first baseman Garrett Cooper and second baseman Vaughn Grissom ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the Giants. Cooper was acquired in a trade with the Cubs on Saturday and Grissom has been rehabbing at Triple-A Worcester after a hamstring strain delayed the start of his first season in Boston by a month. To add both players, the Red Sox will have to subtract two others, shaking up an infield mix that has taken on many different forms through 29 games.

3/14/24 This non-roster invite's Spring Training is hard for the Chicago Cubs to ignore. Garrett Cooper went 3-3 on Wednesday in the Cubs' Spring Training game against Cleveland, raising his preseason average to .400 in six games. Cooper came to Cubs camp as a non-roster invitee back on March 1, giving them some more depth at the first base position. While not on the current 40-man roster, he is making a solid case for him to make the Opening Day roster. With Cody Bellinger likely playing mostly centerfield to start the season, the next men up at first are Michael Busch, Patrick Wisdom, and Matt Mervis.
