9/03/24 Consistency has been key for veteran rotation additions: Guardians breakfast. The sample size is admittedly small, but pitchers Matthew Boyd and Alex Cobb have done exactly what Cleveland's front office had hoped they would when acquiring both veteran starters late in the season. President of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said in addition to providing steady productivity, both Boyd and Cobb have been extraordinary in the Guardians clubhouse. “We needed to get more consistency out of our starting pitching, and I think what we've seen with both Alex and Matthew is they both have a chance to help us do that,” Antonetti said.

8/20/24 What To Watch For In Cleveland Guardians, New York Yankees Series. Two old foes will meet at Yankee Stadium this week for a three-game series as the Cleveland Guardians and New York Yankees are set to face off in a rematch of the 2022 ALDS. Matthew Boyd is projected to make his second start with the Guardians in the series opener on Tuesday. Boyd was phenomenal in his debut last week as he threw 5.1 innings, gave up one earned run, struck out six batters, and issued no walks. Giancarlo Stanton has also been swinging a hot bat recently, and players such as D.J. LeMahieu, Anthony Volpe, and Oswaldo Cabrera can get a big hit at a moment's notice.

8/15/24 Can The Cleveland Guardians Rely On This Veteran Duo To Lead Them To Playoffs?. The Cleveland Guardians patiently waited for Matthew Boyd to finish his rehab assignment so he could make his season debut. At the same time, the front office traded for Alex Cobb from the San Francisco Giants at the deadline to fill the other void in the rotation. Now that both Boyd and Cobb have made their first starts with the Guardians, we can finally answer the question of whether Cleveland can rely on these veterans down the stretch to help the Guardians return to the postseason. Cobb has made two starts with the Guardians, while Boyd only has one underneath his belt.

8/12/24 Matthew Boyd set to make season debut as Guardians host Cubs. Signed by Cleveland as a free agent on June 29, Boyd has not pitched in a major league game since June 26, 2023. 8/07/24 Matthew Boyd Rehab Start Recap, Cleveland Guardians News. The Cleveland Guardians are still in need of more starting pitching help even after the trade deadline. One pitcher is on the verge of returning and there's a reason to have some optimism about what they can contribute to the rotation. Matthew Boyd made another rehab start on Wednesday afternoon, and it was his best one yet. Boyd threw his fastball with the majority of his pitches, and his heater had an average exit velocity of 91 mph it topping out at 93 mph. Boyd threw a total of 63 pitches and 13 of those ended up being whiffs.

7/26/24 Matthew Boyd shines in third rehab start with Guardians. In Friday's game against the Bowie Baysox at Canal Park, Boyd made his third rehab start and second with the Akron RubberDucks, the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians. The left-hander is recovering from Tommy John surgery after sustaining a partial sprain of his ulnar collateral ligament during the 2023 season as part of the Detroit Tigers. Boyd got through two innings with little turbulence, but the Baysox began the third with some noise.

7/21/24 Matthew Boyd Rehab Start Recap, Cleveland Guardians News. The Cleveland Guardians are in desperate need of a boost to their rotation. While they've been rumored to be looking for a starting pitcher on the trade market, there is another arm that could give them valuable innings down the stretch. Veteran arm Matthew Boyd was signed to a major league contract at the end of June but has yet to make his debut with the major league team as he continues to rehab following Tommy John surgery. Boyd went out to the Guardians Arizona complex to continue his recovery but officially made his first rehab start with a Cleveland affiliate on Sunday afternoon.

7/14/24 Matthew Boyd heading toward Arizona Complex League outing: Guardians takeaways. Veteran left-hander Matthew Boyd, signed late last month by the Guardians after missing more than a year with reconstructive elbow surgery, is heading toward an appearance with Cleveland's Arizona Complex League team this week, pitching coach Carl Willis told reporters. Boyd, 33, is eligible to come off the 15-day injured as of Sunday. After that, Willis said Boyd could throw another bullpen during Cleveland's optional workout at Progressive Field on Thursday evening before heading out on a rehab assignment.

7/12/24 Guardians Trade For Former All-Star Pitcher In This Proposal. It's becoming increasingly obvious that the Cleveland Guardians need to address their starting rotation between now and the July 30 MLB trade deadline. The Guardians have made little moves for pitchers here and there, signing Matthew Boyd (who hasn't pitched since last season due to Tommy John surgery) and trading for Spencer Howard (who owns a lifetime 7.04 ERA and got rocked in his first Cleveland start). Basically, the Guardians need to make a significant trade to bolster their pitching staff, and while top-flight hurlers like Garrett Crochet and Jack Flaherty may be pipe dreams, there are certainly other arms Cleveland can realistically acquire.

6/29/24 Guardians sign left-hander Matthew Boyd, who continues to recover from Tommy John surgery. The Cleveland Guardians signed free agent left-hander Matthew Boyd to a major league contract for the remainder of the season, an addition that will give the AL Central leaders some added pitching depth and protection. Boyd, though, is still recovering from undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery last year, and won't be ready to join the Guardians until at least August. Boyd has progressed to throwing live batting practice. “We don't have a specific timetable at this point,” president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said Saturday on a Zoom call.
