Dansby Swanson had four hits, Jordan Wicks pitched five solid innings and the Chicago Cubs beat the Washington Nationals 14-1 for their season-high sixth consecutive win. Isaac Paredes had three RBIs for the Cubs, who finished with 18 hits. Cody Bellinger, Nico Hoerner and Miguel Amaya each drove in two runs. Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson is meant to be the face of what is supposed to be a contending season for the North Siders but instead, his struggles have been a reminder of everything that has gone wrong with the Cubs since winning the World Series in 2016. Sure, that may be an aggressive statement, but the fact remains that since winning the World Series in 2016, the Cubs haven't acted like the Cubs in terms of Major League Baseball free agency. One of the main reasons why the Chicago Cubs season went off the rails after the month of April was due to shortstop Dansby Swanson experiencing offensive struggles that were a reminder of the early days of his Major League career. During the month of May, Swanson slashed .155/.234/.241 through 64 plate appearances. While a knee injury limited Swanson in May, the 38 wRC+ he had that month ignited conversations that the Cubs may have another Jason Heyward situation on their hand. For all the praise that Heyward deserves for the person he was during his tenure with the Cubs, the fact remains his eight-year contract is a large part of the reason why Jed Hoyer is afraid of those long-term commitments to top free-agent players. Over the course of the past month, Swanson is slashing .186/.262/.340 with a wRC+ of 69 in his last 107 plate appearances. Through 306 plate appearances this season, Swanson is slashing .203/.278/.341 with a wRC+ of 77. Swanson hasn't just been bad; he's been a liability for a Cubs' offense that has struggled since the calendar flipped to May.
