Then the injuries began piling up, with German Marquez, Kyle Freeland and Antonio Senzatela going down. Freeland and Marquez have pitched this season. Now Senzatela is slated to make his first major league start since May 10, 2023.

The Rockies shut down the 2021 All-Star because of pain in his surgically repaired right elbow. Marquez, who underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2023, pitched against the Mets in New York on July 14  but experienced discomfort in his elbow and has not pitched since.

7/22/24 Rockies' German Marquez placed on injured list with right elbow inflammation following first start of season. German Marquez's comeback was short-lived — at least for now. After making his first start of the season on July 14 in New York in his return from Tommy John surgery, the Rockies placed the right-hander on the 15-day injured list on Monday with right elbow inflammation. Marquez, who broke the Rockies' career strikeout record in his 2024 debut, didn't feel right after that start despite a week off because of the All-Star break. “When we came back from the break and got together on (July 18) for our workout, through that Friday and Saturday, German's arm just didn't bounce back from the start in New York,” Colorado manager Bud Black said.

7/13/24 Out for more than a year, German Marquez gets nod for Rockies. The Colorado Rockies have waited more than 14 months for German Marquez to return from Tommy John surgery. On Sunday afternoon, he'll get an immediate opportunity to re-establish himself as the Rockies' stopper when Colorado tries to avoid being swept by the host New York Mets in the finale of a three-game series. The right-handed Marquez is slated to oppose Mets left-hander Jose Quintana (4-5, 3.91 ERA). The Mets won their fifth straight game Saturday as Jeff McNeil's two-run double capped a four-run second inning in a 7-3 victory.

6/22/24 German Marquez provides four solid innings in rehab appearance, Spokane Indians beat Eugene 7-0. Jun. 22—It's 1,086 miles from Avista Stadium to Coors Field in Denver — and three levels of professional baseball from High-A to the major leagues. 5/22/24 Braves Even Series Behind Dominant Max Fried Complete Game and Big Offensive Inning. The Atlanta Braves used a big inning and another dominant start from the rotation to take down the Chicago Cubs 9-1 in historic Wrigley Field on Wednesday night, evening the series at one game each. Atlanta's ace was masterful tonight, taking a perfect game into the 6th inning. Per the Bally Sports broadcast, Max is only the third pitcher in recent history to have two complete games prior to June 1st, joining German Marquez (2021 Colorado Rockies) and Nathan Eovaldi (2023 Texas Rangers).

3/19/24 Cal Quantrill, Dakota Hudson provide 2024 Colorado Rockies with hope. Reflecting on his team's 59-103 campaign in 2023, Colorado Rockies manager Bud Black sat in his office, lamenting the catastrophic injuries that derailed his team a year ago. Injuries within the Colorado pitching staff, including two that required season-ending Tommy John surgeries for veterans German Marquez and Antonio Senzatela, left Black scrambling. The Rockies relied on a variety of tactics just to get through the season. For example, there were 17 different Rockies pitchers, including those slated to start and others who were expected to come out of the bullpen, who started games in 2023, and only Kyle Freeland and Austin Gomber started more than 20 games.

3/03/24 As Tommy John surgery turns 50, procedure has many success stories. The Rockies are hoping to add a few more to that list.. German Marquez flexed his right arm as he pointed to the small zipper scar near his elbow. “I have a brand new arm,” Marquez said. It's all systems go for the Rockies' 2021 All-Star pitcher who underwent Tommy John surgery last May. What seemed like a crushing blow for Marquez at the time now looks like a bump in the road. At least, that's how Marquez sees it.

12/06/23 Rockies add Anthony Molina, a right-handed pitcher, via Rule 5 Draft. In the Rockies' perfect world, young, hard-throwing right-hander Anthony Molina will blossom into the next German Marquez. For now, however, the Rockies simply need Molina to provide quality depth to their pitching staff. Molina, 21, was selected by the Rockies Wednesday from Tampa Bay in the major league phase of the Rule 5 Draft and will be added to the active 26-man roster.

9/10/23 Rockies Journal: German Marquez's contract a win-win — if right-hander produces. German Marquez wanted to stay with the Rockies. The jovial right-hander was in the clubhouse nearly every day, joking with his teammates, and being a part of things, even though his right arm was in a brace. Neither was manager Bud Black. “I think we know each other, right?” Black told reporters before Friday night's game in San Francisco.

9/09/23 Rockies Journal: German Marquez's contract a win-win — if right-hander produces. German Marquez wanted to stay with the Rockies. Neither was manager Bud Black. “I think we know each other, right?” Black told reporters before Friday night's game in San Francisco. Marquez and Black have a very special relationship and I'm certain that played a role in Marquez's decision.

9/08/23 Rockies, German Marquez agree to two-year contract extension. The Rockies and right-hander German Marquez have agreed to a two-year contract extension, the club announced Friday. Marquez, 28, underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery in May and will miss a good chunk of the 2024 season. “German has been an integral part of the Rockies organization both on and off the field since his first major league season in 2016,” general manager Bill Schmidt said in a statement.

8/06/23 The German Marquez Trade: A shocking boon for the Colorado Rockies. Believe it or not, and there is ample reason to not, former Colorado Rockies GM Jeff Bridich actually got the better of the Tampa Bay Rays in one of the better trades in franchise history. At the time, the focus was on the two major leaguers as McGee had been excellent so far in his career, but Dickerson had been as well, leaving many to wonder why Colorado would swap an everyday player for a set-up man. Dickerson went on to have two solid though not overwhelming years for Tampa, posting 4.4 Wins Above Replacement in a Rays uniform, before being traded for two players who would never suit up for that team.

7/19/23 Rockies Mailbag: German Marquez's future, Bud Black's job security and trade deadline thoughts. Pose a Rockies — or MLB — related question for the Rockies Mailbag. Lots of decisions to be made soon with Rockies. Have you heard anything regarding German Marquez? It would be a tough end to his Rockies tenure if he's not re-signed.

5/18/23 Rockies shake off awful April to win 11 of last 16 games. In case you missed it while you've been following the Nuggets' quest for their first NBA title, the Rockies have been playing solid baseball. After an ugly April in which they looked to be on a fast track toward the first 100-loss season in franchise history, the Rockies have won 11 of their last 16. Starting rotation: Injuries have decimated this group which is why Karl Kauffmann will make his big-league debut Friday night, despite posting a 7.78 ERA in eight starts at Triple-A Albuquerque. With right-hander German Marquez out for the season (Tommy John surgery) and right-handers Antonio Senzatela (elbow sprain) and Noah Davis (elbow inflammation) on the injured list, the Rockies signed 35-year-old veteran right-hander Chase Anderson off waivers and promoted right-hander Connor Seabold from long reliever into a starter.

5/03/23 Rockies' Kyle Freeland bids to get back on track vs. Brewers. German Marquez, who along with Freeland formed the top part of Colorado's starting staff, said Tuesday he will need Tommy John surgery. The Rockies will have to fill the hole in the rotation -- likely with right-hander Antonio Senzatela, who is returning soon from a torn ACL. Freeland (2-3, 4.32 ERA) will square off against Milwaukee's Eric Lauer (3-2, 5.19) in a battle of left-handers.
