8/19/24 Rest vs. wins: Why Rob Thomson struggles to balance the two. When the bottom of the ninth inning rolled around in Sunday's 6-4 loss to the Washington Nationals, things weren't looking terribly great for your Phils. Matt Strahm's wildness allowed the Nats to take a 5-4 lead in the eighth inning followed by a Jeff Hoffman dinger allowed to Washington rookie James Wood (no, not the guy from Diggstown) turned a 4-4 tie into a two-run deficit. The bottom of the order – Edmundo Sosa, Cal Stevenson and Garrett Stubbs – were due up, not exactly a murderer's row for Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan to wade through.

8/18/24 Philadelphia Phillies Manager Defends Costly Blunder vs. Nationals. Matt Strahm officially took the loss for the Philadelphia Phillies' 6-4 defeat against the Washington Nationals on Sunday, but Rob Thomson deserves much of the blame. The Phillies fell short in a frustrating loss during Sunday's series finale at Citizens Bank Park, blowing their chance at a rare four-game sweep. Thomson bears much of the responsibility for that, as he failed to put his team in the best position to win with his head-scratching moves. Heading into the bottom of the ninth, Philadelphia trailed 6-4 with the bottom of the order coming up.

8/13/24 Phillies All-Star Explains Mind-Blowing Baseball Card Collection. Matt Strahm is a lot of things. As many fans know, he's also an avid baseball card collector. Strahm loves baseball cards, which makes sense given that he plays the sport for a living. One of Strahm's quirks is that he gets a card of every player who hits a home run off him in the big leagues.

7/24/24 Bullpen, defense melt down late in Minnesota as Phillies drop third straight series. Final score: Twins 5, Phillies 4 MINNEAPOLIS — It all unraveled quickly. The Phillies led by two in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Matt Strahm had just gotten Carlos Santana to lift a fly ball to left — deep left, but more than playable, ostensibly stranding two. It dropped. Brandon Marsh got to […]

7/16/24 Matt Strahm on 'open wound' of NLCS collapse, Phillies' trust in Dave Dombrowski at trade deadline. The Philadelphia Phillies are the best team in baseball at the All-Star break and among the favorites for the World Series. Strahm signed with the Phillies prior to last season and pitched some as a starter before settling into his usual bullpen role.

7/11/24 Made for the Moment: Matt Strahm vs. Shohei Ohtani Highlights Phillies Win Over Dodgers. “I remember it very vividly,” Strahm said, and then proceeded to tell the story of the confrontation with one of the game's most-feared sluggers of his era. “(Catcher Salvador Perez) called a curveball. “I think it was like a 114-mile-per-hour ground ball, double play,” Strahm said, a sheepish grin growing on his face, knowing he probably got away with one against Ortiz. Strahm has been the guy who the Phillies have trusted the most to get out of sticky situations.

7/10/24 All-Star reliever Strahm fans Shohei Ohtani in 7th with tying runs on base, Phillies top Dodgers 4-3. All-Star reliever Matt Strahm got two-time MVP Shohei Ohtani flailing at an 83 mph slider for strike three in the seventh inning that saw the Dodgers slugger nearly lose his helmet and leave the tying runs on base, the pivotal out that preserved Philadelphia's lead and helped the Phillies win again without Bryce Harper, 4-3 over Los Angeles on Wednesday night. “He's one of the greatest ever to pick up a bat,” Strahm said. The 32-year-old Strahm is known in Philly as much for his stringy, shoulder-length hair and baseball card collecting as he is recording clutch outs out of the bullpen — the kind that earned him his first All-Star spot after nine seasons in the big leagues.

7/08/24 All-Stars aplenty | Sports Daily Newsletter. It's only fitting that the team with the best record in baseball would have seven players headed to the All-Star Game. The Phillies will reach a new high in franchise history on July 16 with those seven players on the National League team in Arlington, Texas. Relievers Matt Strahm and Jeff Hoffman were named to the team Sunday along with starting pitchers Ranger Suárez and Zack Wheeler.

6/18/24 Top middle relievers for the Phillies and other MLB teams. Who is the greatest Phillies and the game's middle reliever? Before that stat, the game had its share of relievers who gained wins and saves and accumulated a number of innings. Many Phillies historians consider Jim Konstanty as the greatest Phillies reliever. This season, Matt Strahm (3-1, 0.96) and Jeff Hoffman (2-0, 0.89) have been a consistent and dynamic duo in middle relief.

Matt Strahm spent one season with the Red Sox in 2022 before following the likes of other former Boston figures in Kyle Schwarber and executive Dave Dombrowski to the Philadelphia Phillies. Strahm now stands out among the top relieves in the sport this season, owning a 0.67 ERA in 28 appearances. Strahm's strikeout-to-walk ratio sits at 39-to-4, by far the best mark of his career. “Our starting pitching has been unbelievable,” Strahm explained.

3/29/24 IronPigs infielder Nick Podkul back to 100% after facial fractures from HBP. Nick Podkul's first live-pitching at-bat in seven months came against Matt Strahm at BayCare BallPark, the Phillies' spring training home in Clearwater, Florida. “He's a lefty,” Podkul recalled. Major League hitters managed only a .213 batting average last season in 351 plate appearances against Strahm, who earlier this month signed a contract extension with the Phillies.

2/17/24 Here's why Matt Strahm expects new Phillies utilityman Whit Merrifield to 'be a good fit here'. As reliever Matt Strahm scrolled through social media Friday evening, he saw that the Phillies agreed to contract terms with free-agent utilityman Whit Merrifield. “I immediately texted Whit and said a few choice words,” said Strahm, apparently a potty mouth when he gets excited. Merrifield, 35, is a second baseman who also plays all three outfield positions, versatility that will enable the Phillies to thread the needle between not blocking young Johan Rojas from nailing down the center-field job and covering for him if he doesn't.

12/22/23 2023 Phillies in review: Matt Strahm. From the jump, Matt Strahm let us know what he was about. Need two solid innings in the back half of the game to give the other guys in the bullpen a rest? No one could have guessed when Strahm signed last December that he'd open the season as the team's fifth starter but there he was, filling in valiantly for a team who'd already gone through multiple backup plans by the time he landed in that spot. Strahm knew he'd be here at some point.
