7/30/24 Former Giants pitcher Reyes Moronta dies at 31. Former San Francisco Giants pitcher Reyes Moronta died in a motorcycle accident in the Dominican Republic. The 31-year-old was riding a motorcycle in the Villa Gonzalez community on Sunday night when the crash occurred, The Associated Press reported. "We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Reyes Moronta, who pitched for the Giants, Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Angels over six seasons," the MLB said Monday in a post on X. The Mexican Baseball League said in a translated post that it joins "in the grief that overwhelms his family, friends and former colleagues."

7/29/24 Former major league pitcher Moronta dies at 31. Former major league pitcher Reyes Moronta, who dominated out of the San Francisco Giants bullpen for two seasons, died Sunday. According to multiple reports, Moronta died in a traffic accident in his home country of the Dominican Republic. Moronta's death was confirmed on social media early Monday morning by the Mexican Baseball League and by the Bravos de Leon, his former team in the league. Moronta spent parts of seven seasons with four different major league teams, including four-plus seasons with the Giants, from 2017 to 2023.

The Los Angeles Dodgers made several additions prior to the start of 2022 Spring Training, including signing Reyes Moronta to a Minor League contract with a non-roster invitation to big league camp. Moronta made his MLB debut with the San Francisco Giants in 2017 and appeared in a career-high 69 games the following year. He missed all of the 2020 season while recovering from labrum surgery in his right shoulder and only pitched in four games last year.

Reyes Moronta in an interview available on YouTube (Spanish) on getting his first baseball glove Moronta played catcher, just like his dad, or 3B, but was scouted as a pitcher. That was an idea from a scout, who told him that he was getting older but had a good and strong arm. He transferred to a baseball school in the city and was scouted after just a few months and signed for the San Francisco Giants for just $15,000, which wasn’t a fair amount according to his father.

Moronta is up with the team for a second time this season, after originally being called up on April 24. Los Angeles Dodgers selected the contract of Reyes Moronta and optioned Zach McKinstry to Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to first pitch of Sunday’s game against the San Diego Padres. However, McKinstry was immediately recalled as a corresponding move to David Price being put on the IL. The Dodgers added potential depth to their bullpen, as right-handed pitcher Reyes Moronta will be a non-roster invitee at Spring Training. If he cracks the major-league roster, he’ll make $1.5 million in 2021. Moronta has put up solid numbers throughout his career, but he’s dealt with a number of injuries and hasn’t stayed healthy.
