8/31/24 San Francisco Giants Make Surprising Move With Struggling Veteran Infielder. The San Francisco Giants sent infielder Thairo Estrada to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, a move that came two days after the team made the surprising decision to place him on waivers. Major League teams are now using the waiver wire to expose certain players near the end of August for the purposes of giving them a chance to move on to a contender. The Giants would not have saved much and risked giving up a player with controllable years. After he cleared waivers, the Giants could have released him outright and allowed him to become a free agent.

8/30/24 SF Giants outright struggling infielder to Triple-A Sacramento. The San Francisco Giants outrighted struggling infielder Thairo Estrada to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday as part of a lineup shakeup ahead of their series opener against the Miami Marlins at Oracle Park. The Giants also recalled infielder/outfielder Brett Wisely from Triple and placed left-handed reliever Tyler Matzek on unconditional relief waivers. Estrada entered Friday's game hitting just .217 with a .590 OPS in 96 games, well off the pace he set last season when he hit .271 with a .731 OPS in 120 games.

8/19/24 SF Giants add Thairo Estrada to struggling lineup, option Brett Wisely. After one of the Giants' first games of the season, Bob Melvin sat in his office in the bowels of Petco Park and raved about the potential All-Star season their second baseman had ahead of him. It hasn't panned out that way for Thairo Estrada, who was activated from the injured list before Monday's series opener against the White Sox, but perhaps not coincidentally the 28-year-old from Bejuma, Venezuela, will tell you that was the last time he was at full health. “First of all I'm very happy to be back,” Estrada said through team interpreter Erwin Higueros. Before a sprained left wrist sidelined him for the past three weeks, Estrada was batting .216/.249/.353 — a .601 OPS — and on pace for career lows in almost every offensive category.

7/26/24 San Francisco Giants Place Veteran Infielder on IL, Recall Promising Youngster. The San Francisco Giants have placed second baseman Thairo Estrada on the IL with a wrist injury, and have brought Casey Schmitt back as the corresponding move. This marks the second time this season that Estrada has hit the IL. On June 28, he was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left wrist sprain and didn't return until July 9. In 10 games played, Estrada collected just three hits in 34 at-bats with a triple and four RBI.

7/09/24 SF Giants DFA Nick Ahmed; activate Blake Snell, 2 infielders from injured list. Ahmed, 34, was designated for assignment in a series of roster moves that also activated another pair of infielders, Thairo Estrada and Wilmer Flores, from the injured list, along with Blake Snell, potentially signaling their comfort moving forward with Brett Wisely handling the bulk of the shortstop duties moving forward. The Giants had one open spot on their active roster after trading Austin Slater to Cincinnati on Sunday and created another by optioning recent waiver claim Kolton Ingram, a 27-year-old left-hander, to Triple-A Sacramento.

6/16/24 SF Giants' key hits open floodgates as 29-year-old earns win in MLB debut. After Thairo Estrada and Brett Wisely delivered two RBI doubles in the fourth inning for the San Francisco Giants on Sunday afternoon, everybody inside Oracle Park seemed to exhale. The Giants had left dozens of runners on base throughout the first five games of their homestand this week, including 18 in two games to start their series against the Los Angeles Angels.

Rookie shortstop Tyler Fitzgerald added three hits for the Giants, who took two of three from the Pirates and finished their longest homestand of the season 6-4. Pittsburgh lost for the 10th time in its past 13 games. Winn (3-3) held the Pirates to one run over six innings, his line over the past three starts, all victories.

4/16/24 Why SF Giants' extended Florida trip is special for their contingent of Latin players. As Thairo Estrada rounded third after his first of two home runs this week at Tropicana Field, he gestured to a contingent in Giants orange in the seats behind the visitors' dugout. There was his wife, Lorena, and his daughter, Arantza, but also a friend, Jhayme, taking advantage of a rare visit from Estrada and his ball club from faraway San Francisco. “We had very positive conversations — that's what I like to do — and he mentioned to me that during one of those three games, I was going to go deep,” Estrada said in Spanish through interpreter Erwin Higueros. The Giants may be far from home — further than anywhere they'll go this year — but for Estrada, of Venezuela, and many of his Latin teammates, the weeklong swing through the Sunshine State has been a revitalizing re-entrance into the culture they cherish and are most familiar.

4/13/24 SF Giants turn power back on to beat Rays with 5 home runs. Somebody apparently paid the electricity bill because the Giants turned the power back on Saturday after a week in the dark. Seven of the Giants' runs in an 11-2 win over the Rays, evening their weekend series at a game apiece, came on a quintet of long balls — two from Thairo Estrada — snapping a seven-game homerless draught, the longest dry spell from the club in nearly a decade. Another pair was driven in on a bases-loaded single from Mike Yastrzemski, a rare base knock from a Giants hitter with runners in scoring position. With Logan Webb on the mound, timely hitting and a little power proved to be a winning formula.

4/05/24 Thairo Estrada provides heroics as Giants rally past Padres. Thairo Estrada gave the San Francisco Giants a walk-off win in their home opener Friday afternoon, lacing a one-out double to left-center field to score Matt Chapman from first base for a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres. The win completed a happy homecoming for new Giants manager Bob Melvin, the former Padres skipper who grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and played three of his 10 big-league seasons with the Giants. Chapman set the stage for Estrada's heroics by getting hit on the left elbow on a 1-2 pitch from Padres reliever Enyel De Los Santos (0-1).
