Trent Grisham was pulled from the Yankees' first game of a doubleheader against the Rangers on Saturday in The Bronx after getting drilled in the left hand with a fastball. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the center fielder absorbed a 96.3-mph heater from lefty Brock Burke and threw his bat to the ground in obvious pain. A trainer and manager Aaron Boone checked on Grisham, who remained in the game for the moment and came around to score. Trent Grisham drove in two runs and made a nice running catch in center field to help the struggling New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 on Wednesday night for only their seventh victory in 24 games. Relievers Tim Hill (3-0) and Luke Weaver each worked out of jams to protect a one-run lead, and All-Star closer Clay Holmes came on to bail out the Yankees from yet another tight spot in the eighth as the Rays finished 0 for 10 with runners in scoring positions and stranded 12 runners. Grisham ran down Yandy Díaz’s potentially troublesome drive toward the gap in right-center for the final out in the eighth. Holmes got his first save since June 9 with a perfect ninth. During the New York Yankees' brutal loss to the Cincinnati Reds, center fielder Trent Grisham committed this awful error. New York was down four runs at the top of the ninth when Jeimer Candelario hit a blooper to center field. Grisham all but jogged to the ball and even bobbled it upon picking it up, turning what should've been a single into a double all of a sudden. Hooking foul and bouncing off a railing just feet to the right of the pole, sending the count to 2-1 in his at-bat in the fourth inning, Grisham remained hitless in a Yankees uniform. Friday's start against the Brewers — the club that drafted him in the first round, gave him his start in the big leagues and then traded him away the next offseason — was just his sixth of the year. TORONTO — Trent Grisham racked up 500-plus plate appearances in each of the last three seasons before becoming a Yankee. On Monday, despite starting for the second time in three days, he was in the lineup for just the fourth time in the Yankees' 17th game of the season, a 3-1 loss to the Blue Jays . A year ago, the Padres lineup wasn't just top-heavy, it was outright incomplete. In 2023 the bottom third of the order was most often some combination of centerfielder Trent Grisham, catcher Austin Nola, and an infielder like Rougned Odor or Matthew Batten. This year that format has been somewhat mirrored with centerfielder Jackson Merrill, catcher Luis Campusano, and an infielder like Tyler Wade or Graham Pauley.
