Also a bit distressing was another bad outing from Keegan Thompson, who's generally been reliable. Thompson has now allowed five runs in his last three appearances (two innings, six hits, two walks, no strikeouts, 22.50 ERA). For opening day against the Brewers, the Cubbies brought in Keegan Thompson, Brad Boxberger, and Michael Fulmer out of the bullpen once Marcus Stroman's day was over. After finding success as part of the Chicago Cubs starting rotation and also as a multi-inning reliever last season, Keegan Thompson figured to be an important piece to the Cubs' bullpen in 2023 as the expectation was that he would serve as the bullpen ace for the team. Just two years removed from being drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the third round of the 2017 MLB Amateur Draft, Keegan Thompson's career had all but sputtered out. In 2019 Thompson was an injury-prone wreck, struggled to make starts as a 24-year-old in Double-A. After making just three starts all year, the Alabama-native was sent to Mesa and the Arizona Fall League where he made seven starts to the tune of a 4.62 ERA.
