8/04/23 Royals claim Joe Barlow. The Kansas City Royals have claimed relief pitcher Joe Barlow off of waivers, it was announced today. The Texas Rangers designated Barlow for assignment on August 1 to open up a 40 man roster spot for newly acquired catcher Austin Hedges. Barlow, 27, has split the last three seasons between the majors and the minors. After a solid 2021 season, when he had a 1.55 ERA in 29 innings over 31 games after being called in late-June, Barlow put up a 3.86 ERA with a 4.83 FIP in 35 innings over 35 appearances in 2022. Barlow has spent most of this season in AAA, throwing just 9.2 innings over 13 appearances. Barlow was an 11th round pick of the Rangers in the 2016 MLB Draft .

3/25/23 Joe Barlow optioned to AAA Round Rock. The Texas Rangers have optioned reliever Joe Barlow to AAA Round Rock, per the beats. This qualifies, I guess, as a mild surprise, as Barlow was seen as one of six pitchers whose spots in the bullpen were relatively safe. Right now, the Rangers have Jose Leclerc, Jonathan Hernandez, Will Smith, Taylor Hearn and Brock Burke as pretty close to locks.

2/13/23 2022 in review: Joe Barlow. With the 2022 regular season over, it is that time where we go back and take a look at the players who appeared for the Texas Rangers this past season. Today, we look at relief pitcher Joe Barlow. * The other two are J.P. Feyereisen and Alexis Diaz, both of whom are relievers who have only pitched the last few years. Barlow entered the 2022 season as the Rangers' closer, by virtue of the fact that he took over the closer role in 2021 after Ian Kennedy was traded and did good enough not to lose the job.

9/24/22 Joe Barlow activated from injured list. Joe Barlow was activated from the injured list, the Texas Rangers announced yesterday. To make room for him on the active roster, the Rangers have placed Brett Martin on the bereavement list. Barlow has had a rough season, as he has dealt with blister issues for much of the year, resulting in multiple injured list stints.

8/21/22 Calhoun returns, Smith down. The Texas Rangers have made a couple of moves this weekend. On Friday, the Rangers placed Joe Barlow on the injured list with a blister issue, and recalled A.J. Alexy to take his place on the active roster. On Sunday, the Rangers activated Kole Calhoun from the injured list, and optioned Josh Smith to AAA Round Rock.

8/18/22 Moore, Barlow return, King down, Richards out. The Texas Rangers had roster moves both yesterday and today, but with me being on the road yesterday and, you know, that other drama, we didn’t do a post about it, so both days moves are consolidated into this post. Yesterday, Joe Barlow was activated from the injured list. To make room for him on the active roster, Garrett Richards was designated for assignment.

6/05/22 Garcia HR, Barlow Bounces Back for Texas Rangers in 3-2 Win Over Seattle Mariners. Joe Barlow was itching to get back into a game as quickly as possible after his first blown save this season. The Texas Rangers closer didn’t even have to wait a full day. Adolis Garcia hit a three-run homer, rookie Glenn Otto won his third start in a row despite some erratic control Saturday and Barlow rebounded with a perfect ninth inning as the Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners 3-2 — less than 20 hours after the young closer entered the series opener with that same score before giving up a tw...

6/04/22 Suárez's homer in 9th lifts Mariners to 4-3 win over Rangers.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Eugenio Suárez wasn't thinking about his error that contributed to Seattle's blown lead when he stepped to the plate in the ninth inning.

The miscue came to mind after he put the Mariners back in front.

Suárez hit a two-run homer with one out off closer Joe Barlow, and the Mariners rallied past the Texas Rangers 4-3 on Friday night.

A bad throw by Suárez at third base sparked a two-run sixth that got the Rangers even at 2.

“After that error, I didn’t think about, this game is like that and I threw it away,” Suárez said. “But I know late in the game maybe I get an opportunity to do something,”

After Nathaniel Lowe had given Texas a 3-2 lead with a leadoff homer in the seventh, Suárez got his chance. His 10th home run was an opposite-field shot to right after J.P. Crawford walked.

Barlow's first blown save in 18 chances going back to last season gave the Mariners a 5-2 record since dropping a season-worst nine games under .500 at the end of a 7-21 stretch.

“Obviously, he’s not going to be perfect all year,” Texas manager Chris Woodward said. “I think the walk is probably the thing he’ll talk about. I can’t say anything bad about Joe. He just made a mistake and the guy hit it.”

Lowe pulled the first pitch from left-handed reliever Roenis Elías (0-1) into right-center field for his fifth home run.

Penn Murfee (1-0) struck out two in a scoreless eighth for his first major league win, and Paul Sewald worked around a two-out walk in the ninth for his third save.

Texas has lost three straight since reaching .500 for first time since May 2021.

Dane Dunning's winless streak reached six games despite a solid start. The Texas right-hander allowed three hits and two runs in seven innings while striking out...

5/13/22 PitchCom -- aimed at foiling MLB's would-be sign-stealers -- is (mostly) winning over the skeptics. Texas Rangers closer Joe Barlow was skeptical about PitchCom at first. The electronic device, used to transmit pitch signals from the catcher to the pitcher in an effort to curb sign stealing, is brand new in Major League Baseball this season, and Barlow wondered what could go wrong. The PitchCom's speaker made his hat fit less comfortably.

11/16/21 2021 Year in Review: Joe Barlow. Joe Barlow was one of the arms that made a big jump in 2019. He was one of four righthanded relievers who scaled the organizational ladder in 2019 and made big leaps, along with Emmanuel Clase, Peter Fairbanks, and Demarcus Evans. He dominated at Down East, allowing just two runs in 23.2 innings over 17 games, striking out 44 of 93 batters.

9/28/21 Rookies lead Rangers past Angels 5-2 to avoid 100th defeat. It was his first win since his record-setting first two starts, during which he allowed only two hits in 11 innings. Three Texas relievers combined to throw three hitless innings, and Joe Barlow celebrated his 26th birthday by pitching a scoreless ninth for his 10th save in 11 opportunities. Angels starter Packy Naughton (0-4), another rookie, gave up four runs in two innings on four hits and three walks.

9/02/21 Rockies fall behind early, score 5 in 9th to beat Rangers. The Associated Press Brendan Rodgers’ go-ahead two-run double was Colorado’s only hit in a five-run ninth inning as the Rockies rallied from an early 5-0 deficit to beat the Texas Rangers 9-5 on Wednesday. Rodgers, who homered in the fourth inning for Colorado’s first hit, doubled to the gap in left-center off Joe Barlow (0-2), the sixth of seven Texas relievers, following walks to pinch-hitter Elias Díaz and Connor Joe.
