The San Francisco Giants made plenty of moves to improve the roster as a whole in the offseason by bringing in a Cy Young Award winner, a slugging DH, and All-Star third baseman. While the Giants signed international phenom Jung Hoo Lee to a long-term deal, they seemed committed to transitioning from their veterans to the youngsters in the minors. On Tuesday night, Oracle Park was the emptiest it has been all year, at least if announced paid attendance is the closest data point to gospel there is. The Giants drew 23,545 fans for their series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks, a few hundred fewer than their previous season-low set on an April Monday against the Mets. The San Francisco Giants are heading into the stretch run of the baseball season hovering around the .500 mark after a year of ups and downs. It has been a challenging season for the Giants, as they have never really been able to string together a month in which they really gained ground in a tough National League West. While San Francisco has had some months where they finished the over .500, it hasn't been enough to really give them a realistic shot at the playoffs. The NL West is loaded with three potential playoff teams in the Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres. Try as the San Francisco Giants might to hang in the playoff race, losses like the 11-5 defeat they suffered against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday won't help matters whatsoever. The Giants could not have started the game off on a much better note; they scored four in the top of the first inning courtesy of a solo shot from Heliot Ramos and a three-run dinger from Michael Conforto. Giants starting pitcher Hayden Birdsong allowed seven total earned runs — more than double the number of outs he got on the night. The 24-year-old outfielder has lived up to his potential in 2024, though, earning himself a trip to the MLB All-Star Game.
