7/02/24 Cardinals lefty Zack Thompson lands on injured list with back spasms: Minor League Report. Left-hander Zack Thompson will miss his next scheduled start for Class AAA Memphis after he was placed on the 7-day injured list on Monday. Thompson is dealing with back spasms, per Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak. Mozeliak said the hope is that Thompson only misses one start. Thompson completed three innings, allowed two runs, two hits, and walked six in his last start, which came on Friday against Gwinnett at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

4/10/24 Wednesday's Game Report: Phillies 4, Cardinals 3. Zack Thompson knew that when Sonny Gray returned to the Cardinals' rotation, somebody was going to get bumped out of that role. As the least experienced of the starters, Thompson knew it likely was going to be him. On Wednesday, in his first game out of the bullpen, Thompson sent a message – don't forget about me. Thompson worked 3 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out six, to keep the game close and give the Cardinals a chance, even though they ended up losing the rain-sogged game to the Phillies at Busch Stadium.

4/04/24 Cardinals' Zack Thompson calls out 1 culprit in loss to Padres. The St. Louis Cardinals lost the rubber game of a three-game set against the San Diego Padres, and starting pitcher Zack Thompson was not happy with his outing after going five innings and giving up three earned runs in the loss. “Very tough day,” Zack Thompson said, via Bally Sports Midwest. Thompson went into a bit of detail about what specifically he struggled with in his outing against the Padres. The Cardinals dropped to 3-4 on the season after the loss.

3/21/24 Postcard from Cardinals spring training camp for Thursday, March 21, 2024. Zack Thompson came to spring training with a goal of showing the Cardinals that he should be in their starting rotation this year. After his final start on Thursday, Thompson believes he has done that.

3/02/24 Cardinals' Zack Thompson allows two runs, K's three in 7-1 Grapefruit League loss vs. Astros. With his metric-messing arsenal that features two types of curveballs, Cardinals starter Zack Thompson kept the Astros quiet through his first two innings of work on Saturday at Cacti Park of the Palm Beaches. Facing a Houston lineup that featured all of its offensive stars, Thompson delivered two scoreless frames to open the 7-1 Cardinals loss and faced the minimum while notching two strikeouts — both of which came against lefties in designated hitter Yordan Alvarez and right fielder Kyle Tucker. As he was set to face the bottom three batters of the Astros order to begin his third inning of work, Thompson tried “some new sequences” with his pitch mix as a way to “see what works best for me,” he explained after his outing.

2/06/24 Cardinals' Zack Thompson sends strong message about desired role in 2024. The St. Louis Cardinals are eager to return to contending ways in 2024, and to that end,  the development of 26-year old pitcher Zack Thompson will be a key thing to monitor for them given the team's need for more quality starting pitching. In 2023, Thompson's role fluctuated; while he had 25 total appearances for a total of 66.1 innings, only nine of them came with him as the starter. For the upcoming season, it remains to be seen how Oliver Marmol and the Cardinals will be utilizing Thompson. “My whole offseason plan has just been making sure physically and mentally I'm in a spot to be prepared to try to throw 200 innings,” Thompson said, per Lynn Worthy of St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

12/22/23 Cardinals' Zack Thompson and Matthew Liberatore will be wild cards in spring training. Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak sat perched in a chair in the suite at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center that served as the nerve center of the club's front office during the MLB Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tennessee, earlier this month. Asked if the Cardinals head into spring training viewing young left-handed pitchers Zack Thompson and Matthew Liberatore as rotation depth or bullpen options, Mozeliak looked the reporter in the eye and nodded his head as he replied, “Yes.”

10/05/23 Hochman: What we learned about Cardinals free-agent target Sonny Gray in playoff win Wednesday. Look, I like Zack Thompson a lot — and down the stretch, the “K” in his first name was fitting — but he needs to be the sixth reliable starter, not the fifth, heading into spring training. As for the top pitcher acquisition — and we wrote about this throughout the summer — Philadelphia innings-eater Aaron Nola is an ideal free-agent fit for the Cards.

8/17/23 Cardinals look to bounce back vs. surging Mets. St. Louis Cardinals left-hander Zack Thompson can use the rest of this season to audition for a spot in next year's rotation. The process will continue Friday when Thompson (2-4, 3.96 ERA) starts against the visiting New York Mets in the second game of a four-game series. Thompson has made 16 of his 17 major league appearances this season coming out of the bullpen, but he spent time in the Triple-A Memphis rotation earlier this season to transition into a starting role. "Clayton Kershaw has left a pretty good blueprint for a fastball-curveball-slider lefty," Thompson said.
