(AP Photo/Frank Franklin II) AP By Manny Gómez | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com NEW YORK — Mets starter Kodai Senga has his sights set on returning this season. After playing catch in the outfield on Wednesday at Citi Field, media members gathered around Senga in front of the Mets' dugout. 9/18/24 Kodai Senga could return to much improved Mets rotation. Kodai Senga will be eligible to come off the IL on Sept. 25 and the Mets still have decisions to make regarding the right-hander , who has been out since suffering a strained calf on July 26 in his lone start of the season in the majors. Senga threw a bullpen session Tuesday at Citi Field and went through fielding drills as the team holds out hope he might be able to provide something in a potential playoff series. In the meantime, the rotation continues to excel, with Tylor Megill the latest example. Kodai Senga, who is recovering from a strained calf, threw a bullpen session on Sept. 17, 2024. 9/14/24 Mets 'pretty optimistic' Kodai Senga will pitch again this season. PHILADELPHIA — The Mets are still holding out hope that Kodai Senga may return before the end of the regular season, with David Stearns saying Saturday he's “pretty optimistic” the team's ace will make it back. If Senga works his way onto the roster from the calf strain that has kept him out since making one start in July, it likely would be as a starter on a short leash. But the pitcher they acquired in part due to Senga's calf injury at the end of July suffered another setback. Kodai Senga sustained a calf injury during his only start of the season for the Mets. Corey Sipkin for the NY Post Paul Blackburn, sidelined first with a right hand contusion before his return was put on hold because

9/13/24 Kodai Senga's injury rehab taking next step with Mets optimistic for 2024 return. PHILADELPHIA — Kodai Senga's rehab will move to the phase of facing hitters in live batting practice when the Mets return to Citi Field after this weekend, leaving team brass still cautiously optimistic the right-hander will return in some capacity this season. But manager Carlos Mendoza said Friday there are still too many variables in play to start planning a Senga return, either in the final week of the regular season or potentially the playoffs. “It's hard for me to sit here and say, 'Man if he's healthy again or where do I see him?' ” Mendoza said before the Mets' 11-3 win over the Phillies . “I have to wait and see before we have this type of conversation.” 3 Kodai Senga only made one start

9/12/24 Mets tentatively line up best pitching for key Atlanta series -- but Kodai Senga is still in play. The Mets have shifted their rotation to line up their top three starters for a key series against the Atlanta Braves, but the team still considers Kodai Senga a possibility to start in that series, too.

9/05/24 Mets have 'increasing hope and optimism' that key player will return, report says. The Mets could soon be getting Kodai Senga back. According to Andy Martino of SNY, the team is feeling “increasing hope and optimism” that their ace will return this year as a part of the rotation. Senga started the year on the injured list with a shoulder injury and returned in July to make one start before a calf injury seemingly ended his season.

9/04/24 Mets ace Kodai Senga throws off mound as he works toward potential return. Kodai Senga threw about 25 pitches off a mound on Wednesday with Carlos Mendoza adding it was good to see the Mets' ace "letting it go" as he races against the clock to return from the IL this season.

9/03/24 Senga, pursuing Mets return, open to reliever role. Kodai Senga hopes to pitch again for the New York Mets this season -- perhaps even as a reliever -- if they are still in the playoff race when he's eligible to return from the 60-day injured list on Sept. 25.

9/03/24 New York Mets' Ace Open to New Role as Return May Come Sooner Than Expected. This New York Mets' starting pitcher says he's open to any role to help the ball club during the final month of the regular season. Kodai Senga, who has missed all but one start this year for New York, spoke to reporters on Monday and said he's willing to contribute any way he can. The team's ace is eyeing a return to the Mets once he is eligible to come off the 60-day IL on September 26 when there are five games left in the regular season.

8/19/24 David Peterson's latest Mets outing leaves Carlos Mendoza raving. The Mets don't know when — or if — Kodai Senga is coming back to the rotation. And Jose Quintana has been far from his best of late. But they've gotten a complete-game shutout from Luis Severino over the weekend and a strong outing by Sean Manaea, which gave them a boost against the Marlins. Then David Peterson went out Monday night against the Orioles and delivered what manager Carlos Mendoza called “probably the best outing of the year.” Mets starting pitcher David Peterson #23 throws a pitch during the first inning. 8/17/24 Mets Provide Update on When Injured Ace Might be Able to Begin Throwing. The New York Mets are pushing for a spot in the postseason, but they do not yet know if they will have their ace back even if they do make it to October. Starting pitcher Kodai Senga has been ruled out for the rest of the regular season after suffering a high-grade calf strain in his lone outing of the year on July 26. As Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns shared with reporters on Friday, Senga will be able to start throwing upright again "hopefully over the next week to 10 days." “He's still going through the initial stages of the recovery,” Stearns said.

(AP Photo/Pamela Smith) AP By Manny Gómez | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com NEW YORK — Much of Mets starter Kodai Senga's season has been filled with speculation. Questions of when he could return from injury have surrounded him most days to the point where he's rarely at his locker anymore. “I haven't seen him as much either,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza recently joked. 8/11/24 2 biggest concerns Mets must address after 2024 MLB trade deadline. The New York Mets got themselves back in the wild card hunt with an extended stretch of great play after a really tough start to the 2024 season, and that resulted in them being buyers ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline. The Mets are in the thick of it in the National League wild card race, and they strengthened the depth of their roster with some small moves ahead of the deadline to try to get into the playoffs. It really helped offset the loss of Kodai Senga for the rest of the season. The schedule in August is really tough, with two West Coast trips on the way, and the Mets need to keep themselves afloat to hopefully make a run in September when they can play more games at home.

7/31/24 Luis Severino roughed up by Twins as Mets fail to finish sweep. Without an acquired ace and with an injured Kodai Senga , the Mets' clearest route toward a shutdown, Game 1 starter in the postseason would be for 2024 Luis Severino to morph into 2018 Luis Severino. On Wednesday, Severino pitched too much like the 2023 version. On the other side of the trade deadline, in which the Mets brought in Paul Blackburn but not a star such as Blake Snell or Tarik Skubal, Severino did not inspire immediate confidence that the good pitcher he has settled into can grow back into the great pitcher he was years back in The Bronx. The strong right-hander lasted just three innings in which he let up six runs in an 8-3 loss to the Twins in front of 28,875 at Citi Field, where

7/30/24 Why Mets avoided going big at the trade deadline despite injury to ace Kodai Senga. When Kodai Senga went down clutching his left calf last Friday night at Citi Field, it changed the trajectory of the trade deadline for the Mets, but not by much. Starting pitchers Garrett Crochet, Tarik Skubal and Blake Snell could have replaced the Mets ace, but the pitching prices were already high.
