3/27/24 Red Sox minor leaguer Noah Song needs Tommy John surgery and will miss 2024 season. Noah Song, the Naval Academy graduate who once ranked among the top Red Sox prospects, will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the 2024 season, according to a major league source. The righthander spent the summer of 2019 with the Lowell Spinners but was unsuccessful in getting a deferment of his service commitment.

2/28/24 Noah Song, back from Navy service, has a long way to go but will get more chances with the Red Sox. The righthander was drafted by the Red Sox from the Naval Academy in 2019 and pitched impressively in seven starts before leaving baseball for three years to fulfill his service commitment. The Navy allowed him to play but Song was returned to the Sox in August, the Phillies deeming him not ready for the major leagues. Now he's in minor league spring training and was one of 12 prospects temporarily added to the major league roster on Tuesday. “The game got fast for him,” manager Alex Cora said.

Noah Song returned to the Red Sox system on Aug. 4, and Boston isn't rushing his development in his return to baseball after four years away due to Naval Academy service. The Red Sox drafted Song in the fourth round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft, but the Philadelphia Phillies selected the pitching prospect in the 2022 Rule 5 draft. A back injury prevented Song from making Philadelphia's Opening Day roster, and he was on rehab assignment before Boston reacquired the right-hander.

But even with a substantial amount of time passing, the right-hander picked right back up where he left off. Song made his debut with High-A Greenville on Wednesday night after the Red Sox reacquired the 26-year-old last week once he was designated for assignment by the Philadelphia Phillies, who swiped him in the 2022 Rule 5 Draft, and cleared waivers. 8/07/23 Red Sox reacquire former Navy standout pitcher Noah Song from Philadelphia Phillies. The ongoing saga of pitcher Noah Song came full circle last week when he was returned to the Boston Red Sox, the team that drafted the former Navy standout. After being designated for assignment by the Philadelphia Phillies, Song cleared waivers and was offered back to the Red Sox for $50,000. Boston accepted and assigned the 26-year-old to High-A Greenville of the South Atlantic League. “We are excited to get Noah back into the organization and back on the mound in a Red Sox uniform,” Boston director of player development Brian Abraham said in a statement.

Faced with a Saturday deadline to add Song to the active roster for the duration of the season — a stipulation that comes with having selected him in the Rule 5 draft last winter — the Phillies designated the 26-year-old right-hander for assignment, ending his longshot bid to make his major league debut this season after not pitching competitively for three years while serving in the Navy. The Phillies can trade Song, although his Rule 5 status would carry over to a new team and baseball's trade deadline is approaching at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The Philadelphia Phillies prospect struck out four, walked one and allowed two hits over 1 2/3 scoreless innings in his third relief appearance for Class A Clearwater since joining the organization in February from the U.S. Navy. The 26-year-old threw 20 of 33 pitches for strikes in the Florida State League against Palm Beach.
