9/17/24 Slumping Anthony Volpe taking a seat again for Yankees' opener vs. Mariners. SEATTLE — After starting 139 straight games, Anthony Volpe is getting his second day off in the last eight games on Tuesday. The Yankees' streaky shortstop will be on the bench to start Tuesday's series opener against the Mariners at T-Mobile Park, manager Aaron Boone said on his weekly podcast with Jomboy Media, with Oswaldo Cabrera getting the start against right-hander Bryan Woo. Woo is especially tough on right-handed hitters — holding them to a .179 average and .491 OPS in 37 career starts — so Boone explained the decision as wanting to get more left-handed hitters like Cabrera in the lineup. 9/14/24 Yankees' take on Anthony Volpe hitting for higher average with many worse stats. Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe was at the plate and having a good at-bat in the second inning of last Saturday's game with the Cubs at Wrigley Field. When plate umpire Mark Carlson got it wrong and called strike three, Volpe went out of character and showed some anger before returning to the dugout.

8/23/24 Lifelong Yankees fan Anthony Volpe excited to celebrate 2009 champs at Old-Timers' Day. Last year's Old-Timers' Day was naturally special for then-rookie Anthony Volpe, but Saturday's commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the 2009 World Series championship team means even more to the lifelong Yankees fan. “It was the only one in my lifetime, so that'll be awesome,” Volpe told The Post before the Bombers took on the Rockies on Friday night in The Bronx. “Last year was definitely special, just to meet and see a bunch of people I look up to.” It will be the 76th Old-Timers' Day for the organization, which has dedicated the day to honoring members of its most recent championship team. Volpe, who was 8 when the Yankees last won, said he remembers watching the title game with his family

8/22/24 Yankees' Brian Cashman responds to Anthony Volpe demotion chatter. The people mentioning a minor-league reset for New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe are the media and fans, according to general manager Brian Cashman, because he certainly isn't thinking about it. Despite Volpe's underwhelming offensive production — .249/.299/.387 with 11 home runs, 47 RBIs, 22 steals and a 91 OPS+ over 564 plate appearances entering Thursday — Cashman told The New York Post that Volpe is a major-league player and that means struggling (and eventually flourishing) there. “We haven't talked about (a demotion),” Cashman said in a story published Tuesday.

8/20/24 Yankees GM Brian Cashman: 'There’s never been a consideration' of sending Anthony Volpe down to minors. General manager Brian Cashman says the Yankees have never considered sending shortstop Anthony Volpe to the minors despite his up-and-down numbers as a hitter.

8/16/24 Yankees' 2021 No. 1 pick on fire after 2 trades, debuting against them this weekend. Former Yankees No. 1 draft pick Trey Sweeney is getting his first major-league call-up on Friday and expected to debut Friday night for the Tigers against his original professional organization after being traded to the Dodgers last December and then to Detroit in July. AP By Randy Miller | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com NEW YORK — Trey Sweeney seemingly was blocked from ever becoming the Yankees ' starting shortstop from the day they drafted him in the first round out of Eastern Illinois in 2021. 8/15/24 Year 2 wasn't supposed to look like this for the Yankees' Anthony Volpe and Mets' Francisco Alvarez. Anthony Volpe and Francisco Alvarez have had remarkably similar career trajectories. Born about seven months apart in 2001, they were both signed by their teams to deals worth roughly $2.7 million and played roughly the same number of games in the minors (275 for Volpe and 263 for Alvarez). They emerged as key contributors in 2023. Volpe won the Yankees starting shortstop job out of spring training and made his MLB debut on Opening Day. Alvarez took over behind the plate for the Mets full-time just over a week into last season. And each had an up-and-down rookie season: Volpe showed some unexpected power with 21 homers, but too many strikeouts (167, or 27.8 percent of his plate appearances).

7/19/24 NY host: Blame Yankees for contributing to struggling player's bad season. Anthony Volpe looked like he was having a breakout sophomore season. And then the Yankees experimented with him batting lead-off and it all started falling apart. On Thursday, WFAN host Keith McPherson blasted the Yankees organization for their handling of Volpe this season. In any spot in the batting order, Volpe bats .260 (20-for-77) with two home runs, eight RBI's and three stolen bases. In 76 games leading off, he's slashing .242/.293/.358 with 12 home runs, 24 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. 7/16/24 Yankees' Anthony Volpe a 'work in progress' at the plate, Aaron Boone admits. Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe AP By Gabriel Trevino | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com Yankees ' Anthony Volpe played like he was living up to his former top-prospect potential for the first two months of this season. Volpe was hitting at career-best marks with a 34-game on-base streak, and New York had the best record in the league. Now at the All-Star break, Volpe has fallen from batting leadoff to seventh in the order, and manager Aaron Boone said on “Talkin' Yanks,” Volpe, like the Yankees as a whole, is in need of a reset at the plate. 7/15/24 Now what? Yankees' Anthony Volpe lost his power making offseason swing changes that stopped working. Demeaner often is something that Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe has in common with Aaron Judge. Just like the Yankees captain, the second-year shortstop usually the same guy on the field and in the clubhouse win or lose, good game or bad game. Volpe had a deer in the headlights look standing at his locker talking to reporters a few minutes after his two-outs-in-the-ninth error opened the door to a stunning Yankees' 6-5 loss to the Orioles.

7/05/24 Yankees' Anthony Volpe needs to 'keep making adjustments' amid hitting funk: James Rowson. Wherever Anthony Volpe hits in the order, he needs to keep adjusting. Such was the message from Yankees hitting coach James Rowson, who watched the club's shortstop soar up to the leadoff spot after a great first few weeks of the season, then hit a prolonged slump that dropped him out of the top of the order beginning Thursday. When the Yankees opened a series with the Red Sox in The Bronx a day later, Volpe was hitting seventh. Early this season, Rowson said, pitchers tried to attack Volpe at the top of the zone. 3 Anthony Volpe, pictured earlier this season, hit seventh when the Yankees opened their series against the Red Sox. 7/04/24 Scuffling Yankees hear boos as Reds' sweep three-game set. A game that started late ended early. There was the anthem standoff between pitchers on both teams that delayed the first pitch, neither side wanting to return to the dugout (the Reds the winners); there was a challenge one batter into the game concerning whether Anthony Volpe had positioned himself on the grass (he hadn't); there was the third-inning break in play because Austin Wells was forced to switch mitts. By the time the game actually got going, it was just about over. 6 Yankees starting pitcher Marcus Stroman #0 reacts on the mound after giving up a three-run homer. 7/03/24 Should Yankees move Anthony Volpe out of leadoff spot?. Anthony Volpe may be a long-term fixture at the top of the Yankees' lineup, but with the way he's produced of late — and really for the last few months — he could find himself back in the bottom of the order soon. “That's a fluid situation and something we're paying attention to,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said of Volpe's status in the leadoff spot on Wednesday afternoon. Volpe's batting average is down to .257 on the year after his 0-for-5 in Tuesday night's loss to the Reds. Then again, the shortstop's struggles at the plate extend all the way back to April.

7/02/24 Anthony Volpe in throes of dreadful Yankees slump: 'Rough week'. Anthony Volpe is slipping into a cold spell. “It's been a rough week for him,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Teams are attacking him in the strike zone.” Since June 26, Volpe has appeared in 23 games, hitting a .191 with a .461 OPS, no homers, 29 strikeouts and three walks. Anthony Volpe has been mired in a slump. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Tuesday night against the Reds, the story was no different, as he went 0-for-5. “He probably is missing some pitches early in counts, where he is getting a good pitch to hit,” Boone said. “He's fouled a lot of pitches off, probably expanding a little more than he has at times this year.” Explore More Yankees confident Juan Soto's hand injury is thing
