Andrew McCutchen hit a three-run blast to reach the 20-homer plateau for the 10th time in his career and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Miami Marlins 6-4. The 37-year-old designated hitter took Miami's Adam Oller to the first row of the bleachers in left field with two on in the fifth to give the Pirates a five-run lead. Eight of McCutchen's 20-homer seasons have come in Pittsburgh. That's second-most in franchise history behind Hall of Famer Willie Stargell. Jhonny Pereda had three hits for Miami. 9/04/24	Veteran Pirates slugger could retire after 2024 season, per insider. The Pittsburgh Pirates are out of contention and likely to fall short of the postseason for the ninth consecutive season. The team is 65-73 and sits at the bottom of the National League Central, as well as 10 games back in the Wild Card race. One saving grace for the Pirates has been Andrew McCutchen, who returned to the team last year and remains a fan favorite in Pittsburgh. Well, here we are, barely halfway through the 2024 season (the Pirates stand at 40-42 through Sunday's games), and the club is in an interesting position. Outfielder Bryan Reynolds is their only standout offensive player - DH Andrew McCutchen and 2B Nick Gonzales have been reliable, and SS Oneil Cruz has balanced out his eyepopping strengths and over-the-top weaknesses to be an essentially league-average player. Ortiz threw six innings of one-run ball and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-1, winning a series between the NL Central rivals for the second consecutive week.
