For a while, it seemed as though the Atlanta Braves had a secure enough hold on the third and final wild card spot in the NL. On Wednesday, they continued their incredible play with a rousing 10-0 win over the Washington Nationals to keep the Braves at bay with a two-game lead. Acquired from the Texas Rangers last year in the Max Scherzer trade, Acuna was only promoted to the Mets' big-league roster on September 14. Fresh off losing three of four to the Seattle Mariners, and five of six overall on the road, the Texas Rangers appear to have reached terminal velocity in their descent from which no trip to October to defend their championship awaits. In the interim, with games still left to be played, the club has switched to a six-man rotation to accommodate for the returns of Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer and the insertion of Kumar Rocker. 9/12/24	Rocker's debut, deGrom's return highlights series for Rangers in Seattle. At one point, the Seattle Mariners were on top of the world – or, at the very least, on top of the American League West. After a precipitous drop throughout the summer, it was clear that Seattle's rise was a product of smoke and mirrors as they benefited from the poor play of the two Texas teams in the division. Houston righted themselves and eventually overtook Seattle's spot atop the West, while the Rangers haven't been able to change their course toward respectability all season. The pitching staff that Seattle will face this weekend is far different than the one that Texas was sporting just days ago as top pitching prospect Kumar Rocker will make his debut in the opener and former Cy Young winners Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer will each make a return from injury with deGrom set to start in his first game since last April and Scherzer returning for his first outing since the end of July.
