6/20/24 Nationals hope latest young arm up to task vs. Rockies. The Stephen Strasburg era in Washington ended at the beginning of this season, but now the Nationals have another young pitcher to take his place. DJ Herz struck out 13 Miami batters to earn his first win on Saturday and he goes for his second when he faces the host Colorado Rockies in Denver on Friday night to open a three-game series. Herz (1-1, 3.77 ERA) will go against Colorado veteran Dakota Hudson (2-9, 4.89). Herz made his major league debut with a loss against the New York Mets on June 4 then labored through 4 1/3 innings against the Atlanta Braves in his next outing before tossing a gem to beat the Marlins for his first victory.

6/07/24 This Date in Baseball - Stephen Strasburg strikes out 14 in MLB debut. 1914 — New York's Iron Joe McGinnity posted his 14th straight win beating Pittsburgh 2-0. 1933 — Philadelphia's Jimmie Foxx homered in his first three at bats all off Lefty Gomez as the A's beat the New York Yankees 14-10. Foxx had homered his last time up the previous day to tie a major league record of hitting four consecutive home runs. Bobby Lowe did it in 1894.

5/22/24 How SF Giants are preparing to face Paul Skenes, Pirates' flame-throwing rookie sensation. He dials it up into triple digits. Thursday's series finale will be the third start of Skenes' major-league career, and the first time he has faced an opponent besides the Cubs. Since being drafted first overall out of LSU, the 21-year-old has been deemed the most polished pitcher to come from the amateur ranks since Stephen Strasburg and has at least lived up to those expectations, if not exceeded them. “You don't face too many guys that sit 100,” outfielder Mike Yastrzemski said.

5/09/24 A middling Chicago Cubs offense + Paul Skenes could be a disaster on Saturday. Learning the Chicago Cubs will face off against the game's most hyped pitching prospect since Stephen Strasburg while being carved up by Dylan Case certainly checked the box of 'poor timing' on Wednesday afternoon. The matchup has the potential to be disastrous for a Chicago lineup that's been erratic, to say the least, and is working to get back to full strength. In Wednesday afternoon's 3-0 loss to the San Diego Padres, Craig Counsell's club mustered all of one hit - a Yan Gomes single - as Cease, a former Cubs prospect, dominated his former organization, cruising through seven scoreless frames and striking out 12.

The former All-Star is under contract through 2027, though, and the Washington Nationals want him to report to spring training to mentor younger players, per Mark Zuckerman of MASN. It should be noted that Strasburg is still technically on the Nationals' 40-man roster. Zuckerman also reports that Strasburg still has a locker in the team's spring training clubhouse in Florida. Remember the rumored, planned Stephen Strasburg retirement ceremony which was to take place this past September in Nationals Park, officially ending the 2009 No. 1 overall pick's playing career after multiple surgeries and difficult recoveries proved too much to overcome for the now 35-year-old right-hander? Washington Post columnist Barry Svrluga reported that Strasburg, after a few years of trying to overcome injuries and get back on the mound in competitive action, would announce his retirement on September 9th in the nation's capital.
