9/07/24 The road ahead for the Chicago White Sox, who remain on track for the most losses in modern major-league history. BOSTON — Martin Maldonado had been hitless in his previous 28 at-bats when he came to the plate for the Chicago White Sox with two on and one out in the sixth inning on April 26 against the Tampa Bay Rays. Zach Eflin’s 0-1 sinker stayed in the middle of the plate, and Maldonado launched it well beyond the left-field wall for his first home run of the season. Eloy Jiménez hit a two-run home run ...

7/18/24 Promotion for infielder Brooks Baldwin among flurry of White Sox moves coming out of All-Star break. Changes are coming for the White Sox as the July 30 trade deadline draws near. A flurry of moves, including the somewhat surprising but not unwarranted farewell to struggling 37-year-old catcher Martin Maldonado who was designated for assignment Wednesday, set the tone. Triple-A Charlotte catcher Chuckie Robinson, 29, will be recalled Friday to back up Korey Lee, one of the bright spots of the first half, his .167/.200/.302 batting line in the last 30 games notwithstanding.

7/18/24 White Sox make big decision on veteran catcher's future. The Chicago White Sox are designating Martin Maldonado for assignment, according to Ken Rosenthal and Chandler Rome of The Athletic. The veteran catcher has not had a productive season for the White Sox and is now on his way out, possibly with his MLB days done for good. Maldonado was one of the many veterans the White Sox brought in as a stopgap for this season.

6/16/24 White Sox manager Pedro Grifol defends using catcher Korey Lee as DH. White Sox manager Pedro Grifol knows it's a hot topic every time he starts veteran Martin Maldonado and his .083 batting average behind the plate. Lee entered the game Sunday with a slash line of .345/.387/.483 as a DH.

6/15/24 How the Diamondbacks dropped the ball vs. White Sox. Between early stranded runners, an extended strike zone and a bullpen game that got away, the Arizona Diamondbacks' 9-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox was all kinds of frustrating. Manager Torey Lovullo had enough in the eighth inning, as home plate umpire Nick Mahrley ejected Lovullo for voicing his displeasure about “a lot” of missed calls. Perhaps the most peculiar moment was when the D-backs (34-37) dropped the ball. It was the third inning, Arizona was up 1-0 but the White Sox (19-53) had longtime MLB catcher Martin Maldonado standing on second base with two outs.

6/09/24 White Sox unable to produce runs late in 6-4 loss to Red Sox. With the bases loaded in the sixth inning with two outs, White Sox catcher Martin Maldonado was at the plate. The catcher, more known for his defense, had a chance to give the Sox the lead after the Red Sox mustered three runs to tie the game. After threatening, the Sox came away empty, which was why they dropped Sunday's series finale 6-4 to the Red Sox. Manager Pedro Grifol said he knows that questions will continue to arise whenever Maldonado is at catcher.

6/02/24 Houston Astros Seemingly Reducing Playing Time of Star Catcher. The Houston Astros went into the offseason knowing they were going to make a change at catcher and move on from Martin Maldonado who had been a staple behind the plate for them since 2019. With more at-bats given to the emerging star, the expectation was the Astros' offense would excel without Maldonado pulling them down. Houston has struggled to score runs and hit at the same rate they have over the past few years.

4/26/24 White Sox take down Rays to halt 7-game skid. Martin Maldonado and Eloy Jimenez homered and Chris Flexen pitched effectively into the sixth inning as the host Chicago White Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 9-4 on Friday to stop a seven-game losing streak. 4/19/24 White Sox' veteran Martin Maldonado 'trusting' in what he does while battling awful start. Martin Maldonado owned a .205/.281/.346 career hitting line through Thursday, so offense has not not the catcher's calling card during his 14-year career. Crochet gave up three homers, two to Alec Bohm worth six runs, and one to Whit Merrifield in three-plus innings. “One thing I learned in my career, whether you are going good or not, you have to keep doing what you do, trust in what you do and always keep working,” Maldonado said before the game. Maldonado said he knows what his numbers say, but said he's seeing the ball well.

3/18/24 Korey Lee's big spring for White Sox carries into final week. Veterans Martin Maldonado and Max Stassi are 1-2 on the catching depth chart and manager Pedro Grifol has already talked about how they'll divide innings – Maldonado will get more than half – but Korey Lee is saying “what about me?” with his catching and bat this spring. “Never know,” Lee said. Lee has three homers, including two to the opposite field, and a .350/.417/.900 hitting line. Lee was acquired from the Astros for Kendall Graveman at the trade deadline.

3/03/24 Former Astros Catcher Shows Off Leadership Skills. Former Astros Catcher Shows Off Legendary Leadership Skills Nothing has changed when it comes to former Houston Astros catcher Martin Maldonado and his ability to lead. Author: Matthew Postins Publish date: Mar 3, 2024 1:54 PM EST In this story: Houston Astros No one around the Houston Astros would ever question the leadership of former catcher Martín Maldonado. Even as his skills at the plate declined, his prowess behind the plate in defense, game calling and pitch framing kept him in former manager Dusty Baker's lineup most days, even as fans questioned why he wasn't playing Yainer Diaz more often. Well, Diaz is the starter for the Astros this season, with Victor Caratini set to serve as the

2/25/24 White Sox' Martin Maldonado owns up to not running hard on Cactus League ground ball. With so much emphasis on playing the game “the right way,” and doing the little things, not to mention play FAST, which in White Sox manager Pedro Grifol's world means “fearless, aggressive, selfless, technical,” seeing 37-year-old catcher Martin Maldonado not run hard on a dribbler near the mound made Grifol squirm just a bit. Maldonado was brought to the Sox at age 37 to not only handle the pitching staff but to lead a group none-too-deep with talent as Grifol and general manager Chris Getz re-establish a foundation with which to build. Granted, it was the first game of a somewhat meaningless Cactus League game Friday.

Houston Astros Rising Star Discusses Biggest Challenge He's Facing This Year It seems like a young Houston Astros star knows what the most difficult aspect of the game will be for him this season. Author: Brad Wakai Publish date: Feb 18, 2024 4:00 PM EST In this story: Houston Astros Perhaps one of the least talked about storylines throughout the offseason and entering Spring Training is who will be catching pitches from the Houston Astros ' top-end staff. For a long time, veteran Martin Maldonado was slotted in as their everyday catcher. His elite defense and overall presence behind the plate made up for his lackluster offensive performances. But, the Astros got a taste of what it might

1/30/24 Josh Hader reveals why he signed with Astros. Whenever there is a hint of doubt surrounding the Houston Astros, the franchise tends to respond in a big way. With multiple relievers entering MLB free agency and respected catcher Martin Maldonado joining the Chicago White Sox, the club faces some uncertainty. Any concern, however, was greatly alleviated with the huge signing of Josh Hader. The top relief pitcher agreed to a five-year, $95 million contract with the Astros on Jan. 19, which makes him one of the highest-paid bullpen pieces of all-time.
