9/19/24 Cardinals not expected to re-sign former MVP after disappointing season. The St. Louis Cardinals are inching closer to the verge of elimination. With 10 games remaining on the schedule, they are seven games back in the National League Wild Card race. Former NL MVP Paul Goldschmidt is a free agent at the end of the 2024 season and could be playing his final games in a Cardinals uniform this coming weekend. Mark Powell of FanSided listed the veteran slugger as somebody who is unlikely to return to the team in 2025.

9/05/24 Cardinals Slugger One Swing Away From Surpassing Yankees Legend's Impressive Record. A St. Louis Cardinals slugger is on the verge of pulling off an incredible feat despite enduring one of the worst seasons of his illustrious career. After struggling to hit at the beginning of the season and being listed as a potential trade piece at this summer's deadline, a Cardinals veteran is about to surpass a New York Yankees legend on a well-respected all-time list. Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt clobbered his No. 361 home run during the club's National League Central rivalry matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday -- tieing him with Yankees Hall of Fame outfielder Joe DiMaggio on the all-time HR leaderboards.

9/04/24 Cardinals Fan Favorite Seen As Significant Liability; Could Trade Be Imminent?. The St. Louis Cardinals are in a difficult position to give a forecast for the organization's future but analyzing payroll is a great place to start. The most significant contract to consider is seven-time All-Star Paul Goldschmidt, who becomes a free agent this offseason. It's too early to tell whether the Cardinals will move on from the decorated first baseman but it's looking like there could be a chance he re-signs with St. Louis. In the event that the Cardinals decide to free up salary space this offseason, another superstar could be on the move if the organization agrees with what Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter said on Wednesday.

9/02/24 Cardinals could pursue reunion with former slugger this offseason. The St. Louis Cardinals have drawn slightly closer in the National League Wild Card race but are still longshots to reach the postseason. St. Louis sits five games back of the Atlanta Braves. In the event that the Cardinals miss the postseason, they'll likely need some help with their offense, particularly from the right side of the plate. Paul Goldschmidt is likely to depart in free agency.

8/27/24 Cardinals 'Still Waiting' For Five-Time Silver Slugger's Offensive Resurgence. When the St. Louis Cardinals retooled the pitching staff last winter, they never expected to have the offensive struggles they've had this season. Only the Miami Marlins have scored fewer runs in the National League than the Cardinals offense. Unfortunately, one of the Cardinals' most-valued players hasn't looked like himself at the plate all season and there's no sign of that changing anytime soon. "On a larger level, the Cardinals are still waiting on Paul Goldschmidt to join Nolan Arenado's late-summer renaissance," The Athletic's Tim Britton wrote Tuesday when analyzing St. Louis' current circumstances.

8/21/24 How the Brewers targeted Paul Goldschmidt in the 9th inning of the Cardinals 3-2 loss. One of Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol's common refrains throughout the early months of the season was that the club needed star players like Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado to be impactful offensive performers for the club to reach its goals. Marmol's earlier comments typically came in the context of expressing confidence in their pending turnaround and faith in his veteran cornerstones' work ethic and will despite struggles at the plate. With fewer than 40 game remaining in the season and the Cardinals looking a long way up at the Milwaukee Brewers in the standings, time has undoubtedly run short for the Cardinals to make a postseason push and for their stars to change the outlook of their individual seasons. Defeats such as the one the Cardinals suffered at the hands of the Brewers on Tuesday night, a spirit-dampening 3-2 loss in front of an announced crowd of 30,022 — the lowest non-pandemic era crowd in the history of Busch Stadium III — are enough to raise the doubts about whether it's too late.

8/20/24 Photos: Cardinals offense again comes up short in 3-2 loss to Brewers. 8/19/24 Cardinals could poach slugger from Brewers to fill lineup needs for 2025. The St. Louis Cardinals have fallen pretty far since reaching the high point of their season on July 8. It may be time for St. Louis to turn their focus to 2025 and beyond. One of their biggest needs is a right-handed bat to replace Paul Goldschmidt, who is likely to depart this offseason. For that, they could look to poach slugger Rhys Hoskins from the Milwaukee Brewers.

8/15/24 Cardinals could target veteran Mariners slugger this winter as DH option. The St. Louis Cardinals find themselves under .500 for the first time since mid-June thanks in large part to their offensive struggles. Franchise cornerstones Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado have been unable to carry the team two years removed from MVP-caliber seasons. Goldschmidt may depart in free agency, and that could leave the Cardinals in the market for a right-handed bat. Justin Turner could be a possibility.

8/15/24 Cardinals could pursue Mets slugger in free agency to bolster lineup. While much of the focus has been on the pitching struggles, the main issue for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2024 has been their offense. Franchise cornerstones Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado have not performed up to par, and other stars such as Jordan Walker, Lars Nootbaar, and Nolan Gorman have disappointed. Goldschmidt is a free agent at the end of the season and St. Louis will need to replace him with a power bat.

7/27/24 Nationals beat Cardinals 10-8 in 10 innings. Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th, the 2,000th hit of his career, but all that did was reduce the final margin of the game. Staked to leads of 5-2 after three innings and 6-3 after four innings, Sonny Gray let the Nationals back into the game while the Cardinals offense was held to just two hits between the fifth and ninth innings.
