9/13/24 Braves second base woes end with return of veteran utility player. The Atlanta Braves have been hamstrung with injuries to key players all season long, but fans finally received a piece of good news on Friday afternoon — albeit a small one. Whit Merrifield is back in the lineup for the Braves on Friday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers, batting ninth and playing second base, per Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The return is surprisingly quick, considering that Merrifield fouled a ball off his left foot and fractured it on Sept. 6 and he was initially expected to miss at least six weeks. If Merrifield can play through the pain, he could make a considerable difference until Ozzie Albies can return from a left wrist fracture he suffered on July 21.

9/09/24 Nationals Notebook: Focusing on the future. The Washington Nationals were officially eliminated from the NL East Friday night, and although they won't be long in the Wild Card race (elimination number is seven), they still have plenty to play for as more than a few players on the field, plus pitchers in the rotation/bullpen are going to have the opportunity to make their case for becoming contributing factors in 2025. Digesting the Division: Philadelphia (85-58) lost two of three in Miami, slipping one game behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for home field advantage in the NL Playoffs. Meanwhile, the Braves deal with another injury as infielder Whit Merrifield is out with a fractured foot. Washington (64-79) can still finish with a better record than last year with an 8-11 finish.

9/07/24 Braves' Whit Merrifield dealt crucial injury update. The Atlanta Braves (77-64) have been battling injuries throughout the 2024 MLB campaign but have mostly managed to stay afloat to this point. Midseason pickup Whit Merrifield fouled a ball off his left foot in the Braves' 3-1 win versus the Toronto Blue Jays and brutally suffered a foot fracture. “Doctors told him six weeks last night,” MLB.com's Mark Bowman reported on Saturday. It is tough to fathom the three-time All-Star being able to rejoin Atlanta in time for a home showdown with Los Angeles given the nature of his injury, but a unique set of circumstances might pave the way for an improbable return.

8/28/24 Bottom Half of the Order Lifts Braves to Another Series Win. The Atlanta Braves took down the Minnesota Twins in 10 innings, 8-6. In total, the Braves scored eight runs on 11 hits and were an impressive 6-for-15 (.400) with runners in scoring position. Just after going a perfect 5-for-5 on Monday night, Whit Merrifield went a brutal 0-for-6 on Tuesday from the lead-off spot.

8/24/24 With help of unsung heroes, Braves seek sweep vs. Nats. Three players picked up by the Atlanta Braves as injury replacements have been instrumental in keeping the team in postseason contention. The Braves, who will try to complete a three-game series sweep against the visiting Washington Nationals on Sunday afternoon, have gotten timely production from second baseman Whit Merrifield, right fielder Ramon Laureano and third baseman Gio Urshela. The three players are a combined 11-for-22 in the first two games of the Washington series. Laureano has an eight-game hitting streak, while Merrifield has reached base in 18 consecutive games.

8/21/24 Braves' Whit Merrifield gets 100% real on revenge game vs. Phillies. The Atlanta Braves earned a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday evening. The Phillies' frustrations continued in the loss, as the Braves are trying to climb back in the National League East division race. Whit Merrifield, who went 2-3 with a run scored in Atlanta's win, got brutally honest on playing against a team that moved on from him earlier in the season. “I would be lying if I said it didn't feel good to play well against a team that told you that you weren't good enough to play for them,” Merrifield said, via Bally Sports South.

7/25/24 Of The Mets, An Unlikely Body-Swapping Win And A Very Familiar Summer. There was Whit Merrifield, a pinch-runner three days removed from being plucked off the scrap heap, barely stealing second base and then getting caught trying to steal third base for the second out in the ninth inning. Merrifield's maneuvers were reminiscent of Jay Payton, a rookie who entered as a pinch-runner for Tony Phillips on Sept. 25, 1998 and got thrown out at third base for the final out of the eighth inning in a 6-5 loss to the Braves.

7/22/24 Sources: Banged-up Braves agree with Merrifield. Superutilityman Whit Merrifield and the Atlanta Braves are in agreement on a major league contract, and Merrifield will join the team a day after All-Star second baseman Ozzie Albies fractured his wrist, sources told ESPN. Merrifield was released last week by the Philadelphia Phillies after hitting .199/.277/.295 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 174 plate appearances. The 35-year-old signed a one-year, $8 million deal with the Phillies in the offseason and will receive a prorated portion of the $740,000 major league minimum from Atlanta.

7/15/24 Whit Merrifield's departure offers a hint at the Phillies' trade deadline strategy. The release of Whit Merrifield is no small thing. The Phillies' decision to swap out Merrifield for Weston Wilson was something more than that. As manager Rob Thomson said on Friday afternoon, there is nothing procedural about telling a well-respected 35-year-old veteran that he is no longer the man for the job. “I've been a farm director, field coordinator, I've had many, many releases and had to fire many, many people and this was one of the tougher ones I've had,” Thomson said.

7/13/24 The trade deadline acquisition Phillies "expect" to make, per insider. The Philadelphia Phillies are a club with championship aspirations and a clear roster weakness. All season, the Phillies have been one outfielder short. After veteran utilityman Whit Merrifield was released on Friday, the Phillies have one less big-league position player than they know they need.
