8/26/24 Houston Astros Star Reliever Nearing Return After His Stint on Injured List. When the Houston Astros reunited with Hector Neris after he was surprisingly released by the Chicago Cubs, that move was as much to solidify the backend of their bullpen for the stretch run as it was to mitigate the loss felt by Ryan Pressly being on the injured list. With the Astros now on top of the AL West standings, they're looking to ensure they get into the playoffs by winning another division title. For Houston to make another deep run, though, they'll need their bullpen healthy.

8/24/24 Astros sign Hector Neris for second run with team. The Houston Astros adjusted their pitching staff Saturday, signing free agent right-hander Hector Neris and activating right-hander Kaleb Ort from the paternity list. The Astros did not announce contract terms for Neris. In corresponding moves, infielder Jacob Amaya was designated for assignment, while right-handers Shawn Dubin and Seth Martinez were optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land.

8/22/24 Former Philadelphia Phillies Star Reunites with American League Powerhouse. As the Philadelphia Phillies attempt to win their first World Series title since 2008, something that continues to drive them is coming close in 2022 when they held a two games to one lead against the Houston Astros before eventually seeing their opponent hoist the trophy. Hector Neris spent eight years with the Phillies from 2014-21. Neris signed with his third MLB team during this past offseason, inking a $9 million deal with the Chicago Cubs.

8/22/24 Astros bring back Hector Neris after failed Cubs stint. The Houston Astros have made seven straight American League Championship Series and are looking for an eighth. The Cubs, on the other hand, are set to miss the playoffs again. The designated bullpen arm Hector Neris for assignment on Wednesday. The Astros wasted no time in re-acquiring the World Series Champion, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

8/21/24 Prospect News: Rocker Is Rolling, Walker Sent Packing. The Cubs released closer Hector Neris, which probably makes Jorge Lopez the closer for now. The club also recalled deadline acquisition RHP Jack Neely, a former Yankees prospect who checks in at a gargantuan 6’8” 245 lbs. He’s thrown 6.2 scoreless innings with a 52 percent strikeout rate for Triple-A Iowa since the trade that sent him there. RHP Porter Hodge is the early favorite for the gig in 2025 until further notice, specifically a notice of the club getting involved in the reliever reclamation market as it often does. RHP Tyson Miller has been excellent this season but doesn’t feature the wipeout arsenal most teams want in a guy who handles the ninth. Meanwhile, jettisoned Cubbie farmhands RHPs Manuel Rodriguez and Jeremiah Estrada are key pieces of other teams’ bullpens. I won’t count RHP Hunter Bigge because he at least was traded for something. Can’t win ‘em all, I realize, but here’s hoping Neely gets a real opportunity to nail down a long-term roster spot.

8/17/24 Cubs' 'nasty' bullpen delivers in rain-filled win over Blue Jays. The run snapped his streak of 16 scoreless innings and conjured memories of Hector Neris' blown save Friday. Then with the Blue Jays down to their last out and slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at the plate, Lopez got him to chase three consecutive sliders for the strikeout that ended the Cubs' 3-2 victory.

8/16/24 Cubs host Blue Jays with an eye on wild-card chase. Nothing is easy these days for the Chicago Cubs, who are battling to stay within striking distance in the crowded National League wild-card race. The Cubs will try to build some much-needed momentum when they continue a three-game series against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday. Chicago had a seemingly comfortable 5-2 lead disappear in the ninth inning on Friday, when the Blue Jays tied the game with three runs against Hector Neris.

7/11/24 Houston Astros Could Reunite with Reliever Who Got Away. The Houston Astros bullpen hasn't exactly gone the way that they had hoped it would. As Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report searched for under-the-radar trade candidates ahead of the MLB deadline, a former Houston pitcher found himself on the list. After signing with the Chicago Cubs back in February, Hector Neris might already be on the move. It looks as though Chicago won't be competing for a World Series this year and will likely be selling off players they can get something in return for.

6/20/24 Chicago Cubs Trade Proposal Pulls Off Deal With Cross-Town Rival White Sox. The Chicago Cubs once again saw just how bad their bullpen is on Monday night against the San Francisco Giants. It has become a normal thing for the Cubs to blow leads late in games this season. No fan feels safe about any lead that Chicago is able to get. Hector Neris is the latest player to attempt filling the closer role.

6/18/24 Craig Counsell's stance on Cubs closer role after Hector Neris' latest debacle. The Chicago Cubs have a closer issue on their hands. Hector Neris has been brutal in his last three appearances, blowing two saves and allowing eight runs in total. In his last outing, he surrendered a three-run home run to Thairo Estrada that gave the San Francisco Giants a lead they wouldn't relinquish in the ninth inning. The Cubs are 34-39 right now, good for last place in the NL Central.

5/01/24 Chicago Cubs fans must see the insane ending to victory over the New York Mets. Given the bullpen struggles, specifically closing out games, Cubs fans have grown used to holding their breaths whenever the North Siders are in a save situation. Veteran Hector Neris has been the reliever that Cubs' manager Craig Counsell in place of Adbert Alzolay as the team's closer and Neris was on the mound on Wednesday as he tried to earn his fifth save in as many opportunities. For Neris, while he has converted each save opportunity that he has faced this season, it hasn't been clean.

4/30/24 Insider Says Chicago Cubs New Closer Isn't Long For Role Despite Success. Insider Says Chicago Cubs New Closer Isn't Long For Role Despite Success The Chicago Cubs already switched up their closer one time this season, and it seems like another change could be coming soon despite the success of their current pitcher in that role. Author: Brad Wakai Apr 30, 2024 In this story: Chicago Cubs Hector Neris MLB Many fans of the Chicago Cubs were asking for the team to make a change to their closer role after Adbert Alzolay blew a Major League-high four saves. Manager Craig Counsell also decided that was the smart thing to do and ultimately made their offseason signing Hector Neris the closer. So far, the results have been good. In the last four save opportunities he's had,

4/15/24 Cubs' big Hector Neris problem could go from bad to worse if this happens. Hector Neris has been a disaster for the Chicago Cubs in the early going. Now, we're not even 10% of the way through the 2024 season (not that you'd know it by scrolling Twitter) and there's time for the veteran to re-discover what made him such a reliable bullpen arm in recent years. With six walks in five appearances, it's been all bad for Neris. Right now, though, as our friends at Bleacher Nation pointed out, there's not a whole lot the Cubs can do besides hope he can work through it.

3/25/24 This Chicago Cubs offseason grade highlights a major concern. The Chicago Cubs concluded their Cactus League scheduled on Sunday with the focus now shifting to the start of the regular season on Thursday. The Cubs are entering the 2024 season with the expectation of winning the National League Central but their offseason has allowed for doubt to remain with that prediction. It's not that the Cubs had a bad off-season, however, it was one that left many fans with a desire for more. The Cubs were opportunistic with their additions as Hector Neris and Shota Imanaga both represent much-needed improvements to their pitching staff while on team-friendly deals.

3/17/24 New Cubs Reliever Makes "Fabulous" Gesture to Minor Leaguers. New Chicago Cubs Reliever Makes "Fabulous" Gesture to Minor Leaguers Hector Neris, the Chicago Cubs new reliever, is already endearing himself to the organization. Author: Kade Kistner Publish date: Mar 17, 2024 2:00 PM EDT In this story: Chicago Cubs The Chicago Cubs made some significant moves this offseason but one that could really payoff is the one they made to bolster their bullpen. During the 2023 MLB season, the Cubs bullpen was the unit that was the shakiest to start the season and ended up costing Chicago multiple games. In order to address those concerns the front office went out and signed veteran reliever Hector Neris to a one-year, $9 million deal. A fair offer for a 35-year-old

3/11/24 Astros Still Have Battle For This Position. Houston Astros Still Have Battle For This Position The Houston Astros have a battle at this position during the remainder of Spring Training. Author: Jon Conahan Publish date: Mar 11, 2024 11:00 AM EDT In this story: Houston Astros The Houston Astros head into the 2024 season with an essentially set roster. With a veteran team and players who have been in the organization for multiple years now, there aren't many storylines in Spring Training. While much has stayed the same, the Astros did lose Hector Neris, Ryne Stanek, and Phil Maton this offseason. Losing three veteran relievers who proved to be able to get outs at a high level will hurt Houston more than many think. Signing Josh Hader

2/17/24 Cubs expecting hitters to take steps forward, but that alone won't replace Cody Bellinger. With the Cubs' first official full-squad workout scheduled for Monday, talk around camp has been optimistic. ''We struggled in September and fell a game short with a team that I feel like probably should have been in the postseason,'' president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said at the start of camp. ''And I think we've added some really good players this winter. The Cubs did bolster the pitching side. The bullpen, which was relatively green last season, should benefit from more experience and the offseason signing of veteran Hector Neris.

2/09/24 Houston Astros Lose Pitching Depth. Houston Astros Lose Pitching Depth After Youngster Was Claimed Off Waivers The Houston Astros might be looking to add some more pitching to their organization after one of their youngsters was claimed off waivers. Author: Brad Wakai Publish date: Feb 9, 2024 7:00 PM EST In this story: Houston Astros Entering this offseason, the Houston Astros knew they'd have to address the three bullpen departures they were facing due to free agency. Hector Neris, Ryne Stanek and Phil Maton all walked out the door and a reunion was not likely. Originally, the Astros planned on having a pretty quiet offseason because owner Jim Crane didn't want to go into the luxury tax threshold. Once it was announced
