The Mets released the veteran first baseman, enabling Voit to become a free agent before the season starts and after a statistically poor spring from Voit. The 33-year-old went 4-for-34 (.118) with a home run, three walks and 14 strikeouts in the Grapefruit League, a minor league signing who was unable to win a major league job. After rejoining the New York Mets this offseason because he felt he had a shot to win a job as a designated hitter and backup first baseman, the former slugger was released Tuesday, according to Mike Meyer of Metsmerized.
