For the fourth time in five major league seasons, Leody Taveras appears headed for sub-league average offensive performance, but there is one area where he has made significant improvement and it's imperative for his future. While Taveras was called out when his hand became disengaged from the base on a second-inning steal attempt Thursday, he's already set a career high for steals with 18 in 24 attempts. Leody Taveras hit a game-ending single with one out in the ninth inning and the Texas Rangers beat the Oakland Athletics 3-2. The bases were loaded when Taveras grounded a single through the middle and past a drawn-in infield, sending pinch-runner Ezequiel Duran home with the winning run. Athletics reliever Tyler Ferguson struck out the side in the eighth, but hit Nathaniel Lowe with a pitch to start the ninth before Carson Kelly reached on a bloop single and Travis Jankowski drew a four-pitch walk with one out. The New York Yankees built a five-run lead and held on after the Texas Rangers mounted a late rally to take the series with an 8-7 win Sunday at Yankee Stadium . The Rangers scored a run in the sixth. two in the seventh, three more in the eighth and had the tying run at third base when Leody Taveras grounded out to end the game. Nathaniel Lowe and Carson Kelly homered during a three-run eighth to pull Texas to within two. In the ninth, Wyatt Langford and Lowe walked with two outs ahead of Adolis García 's RBI single. Pinch-runner Ezequiel Duran was at third and García was at second when Taveras grounded out to second to end the game.
