Since arm injuries knocked Chris Paddack and Joe Ryan from action, the Twins have looked to a small handful of young pitchers to fill the void — and they're not just playing out the string here. Four games out of first in the American League Central on Friday, and two up in the race for the second wild-card spot, the Twins are trying to lock down their second straight postseason appearance. Three young pitchers are now getting serious innings in a pennant race, including rookie right-handers David Festa and Zebby Matthews, who made their major-league debuts over the past month, and right-hander Louie Varland, who has been up and down between St. Paul and Minneapolis since making his debut in 2022. | 8/11/24 | Starter or reliever, Chris Paddack just hoping to pitch again this season for the Twins. If Chris Paddack had his way, he would successfully rehab from the forearm muscle strain that has sidelined him since July 15 and slot back into the Twins' rotation for the final postseason push. “I haven't got to experience a starter role in a playoff atmosphere with fans,” Paddack said Sunday. Paddack has started in a game in the playoffs — for San Diego in 2020, but that was MLB's COVID season — a forgettable start (six runs on eight hits in 2 1/3 innings) with no fans in the stands. Last year, Paddack returned from injury to pitch 3 2/3 scoreless innings against the Astros in the AL Division Series, allowing one hit and striking out six. The Twins were unable to come to an agreement on a trade that would have brought another starter into the fold ahead of Tuesday's deadline. After getting hit around in his first two major league starts, allowing 12 runs through 10 innings, Tuesday night marked the second straight promising effort from Festa, who is currently pitching in the rotation spot that had been occupied by the now-injured Chris Paddack. When Chris Paddack's elbow “kinda locked up” on him over the all-star break, it triggered some bad memories for the Twins right-hander. In the middle of his first full season of pitching since 2021, Paddack already is a veteran of two Tommy John surgeries. “I don't think the success rate of guys coming back from three Tommy Johns is ideal at all,” he said Sunday.
