Varland has primarily started for the Twins during his stints with the big league club the last two seasons, and Baldelli has been hesitant to move him to the bullpen as he's mentioned the possibility of using a sixth starter at points in September with the Twins having very few breaks in the schedule. Yandy Díaz hit a two-run homer in an eight-run fourth inning and the Tampa Bay Rays went on to beat the Minnesota Twins 9-4 on Wednesday night. All eight runs were scored off Louie Varland (0-6), who was recalled from Triple-A St. Paul to follow opener Ronny Henríquez. Taylor Walls had a two-run single and José Caballero had an RBI single in the inning. The Twins recalled right-hander Louie Varland from Triple-A St. Paul on Wednesday and optioned right-handed reliever Diego Castillo back to the Saints as the corresponding move. It always appeared to be just a matter of time before Varland would be back up for his sixth stint with the Twins. Manager Rocco Baldelli had alluded to working in a sixth starter at some point or points in September, and while reliever Ronny Henriquez will start Wednesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, there's a good chance Varland could come in and give the Twins several innings of relief. Right around this time last year, the Twins decided to move Louie Varland to the bullpen, allowing him first to get his feet wet in the role at Triple-A before deploying him as a weapon out of the major league bullpen. | 8/14/24 | Varland recalled by Twins, will start Wednesday. The Minnesota Twins will have pitcher Louie Varland back on the mound Wednesday as they look to sweep the Kansas City Royals. On Wednesday morning, the team announced Varland had been recalled from the St. Paul Saints and had optioned fellow right-handed pitcher Josh Winder. Varland previously played during a doubleheader against Cleveland, allowing three runs on eight hits. While playing for the Saints, he recorded 84 strikeouts and 28 walks during 15 starts.
