9/17/24 Red Sox Rookie Of The Year Candidate Earns Surprising Performance Grade. During a topsy-turvy 2024 campaign, one of the best things that has happened to the Boston Red Sox has been the youth movement. The Red Sox have had numerous young players perform above expectations this season on both sides of the ball. One of the best surprises for the Red Sox has been rookie right fielder Wilyer Abreu, who came over in the Christian Vázquez trade with the Houston Astros in 2022. In fact, Abreu was the less-heralded of the two prospects Boston received, behind second baseman Enmnauel Valdez.

9/10/24 Wilyer Abreu grades himself harshly, but Red Sox rookie has planted himself firmly in award consideration. Not when manager Alex Cora, on several occasions, noted Abreu's learning curve wasn't as pronounced as Jarren Duran's or Triston Casas's when they first faced the challenges of the majors. When Abreu received some pushback on his assessment of himself, he smiled and finally gave in — a bit. Casas had a tough few months when he got his first real taste of the big leagues last year. Duran had a tough few years before breaking out in 2023.

8/27/24 Red Sox Rising Star Ranked No. 5 Rookie Of The Year Candidate By Insider. The Boston Red Sox are likely going to fall short of a playoff berth, but 2024 has been far from a complete failure. One of the most surprising successes of Boston's season has been the stellar play of two of its rookies, Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela. Abreu was the less-touted of the two players heading into the season, which makes it all the more rewarding that he was named a top-five candidate for American League Rookie of the Year on Tuesday by The Athletic's Jim Bowden. Bowden ranked Abreu at No. 5 on his list of the ten candidates for the award (with Rafaela falling close behind at No. 6) and noted Abreu's underrated defense.

8/09/24 Wilyer Abreu has found solace on the diamond. The outfielder played Sunday's game at Globe Life Field against the Rangers in his grandmother's memory. Now back in Boston, Abreu is set to face his former team as the Astros visit for a three-game weekend series. “I'm good, but it's been difficult,” Abreu said through a translator after multiple rounds of batting practice Friday. Despite everything on his shoulders, Abreu was able to put his emotions aside Sunday.
