8/26/24 Houston Astros Star Reliever Nearing Return After His Stint on Injured List. When the Houston Astros reunited with Hector Neris after he was surprisingly released by the Chicago Cubs, that move was as much to solidify the backend of their bullpen for the stretch run as it was to mitigate the loss felt by Ryan Pressly being on the injured list. With the Astros now on top of the AL West standings, they're looking to ensure they get into the playoffs by winning another division title. For Houston to make another deep run, though, they'll need their bullpen healthy.

8/24/24 Astros sign Hector Neris for second run with team. The Houston Astros adjusted their pitching staff Saturday, signing free agent right-hander Hector Neris and activating right-hander Kaleb Ort from the paternity list. The Astros did not announce contract terms for Neris. In corresponding moves, infielder Jacob Amaya was designated for assignment, while right-handers Shawn Dubin and Seth Martinez were optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land.

8/22/24 Former Philadelphia Phillies Star Reunites with American League Powerhouse. As the Philadelphia Phillies attempt to win their first World Series title since 2008, something that continues to drive them is coming close in 2022 when they held a two games to one lead against the Houston Astros before eventually seeing their opponent hoist the trophy. Hector Neris spent eight years with the Phillies from 2014-21. Neris signed with his third MLB team during this past offseason, inking a $9 million deal with the Chicago Cubs.

8/22/24 Astros bring back Hector Neris after failed Cubs stint. The Houston Astros have made seven straight American League Championship Series and are looking for an eighth. The Cubs, on the other hand, are set to miss the playoffs again. The designated bullpen arm Hector Neris for assignment on Wednesday. The Astros wasted no time in re-acquiring the World Series Champion, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

8/21/24 Prospect News: Rocker Is Rolling, Walker Sent Packing. The Cubs released closer Hector Neris, which probably makes Jorge Lopez the closer for now. The club also recalled deadline acquisition RHP Jack Neely, a former Yankees prospect who checks in at a gargantuan 6’8” 245 lbs. He’s thrown 6.2 scoreless innings with a 52 percent strikeout rate for Triple-A Iowa since the trade that sent him there. RHP Porter Hodge is the early favorite for the gig in 2025 until further notice, specifically a notice of the club getting involved in the reliever reclamation market as it often does. RHP Tyson Miller has been excellent this season but doesn’t feature the wipeout arsenal most teams want in a guy who handles the ninth. Meanwhile, jettisoned Cubbie farmhands RHPs Manuel Rodriguez and Jeremiah Estrada are key pieces of other teams’ bullpens. I won’t count RHP Hunter Bigge because he at least was traded for something. Can’t win ‘em all, I realize, but here’s hoping Neely gets a real opportunity to nail down a long-term roster spot.
